PEMBERVILLE - A high school athletic director with five years of experience was hired Monday by the Eastwood Board of Education.
Chris Fahim, who will be paid $61,155 annually, will also be the high school assistant principal, effective Aug. 1.
After the regular board meeting, Fahim said he has worked at Cardinal Stritch High School in Oregon for nine years, the last five as athletic director. He has also been a social studies teacher.
He said he and his wife, Tracy, will hopefully move to the Eastwood area once the housing market turns around and they can sell their home.
Eastwood high school assistant principal/athletic director Troy Slattman resigned in March, effective July 31.
In other athletic business Monday, high school principal Jeff Hill announced that girls track coach Richard Morgan is leaving.
The Eagles won their ninth straight Suburban Lakes League track and field championship last weekend.
Also, the board hired Shaun Briggs as varsity girls basketball coach. His name was taken out of the regular supplemental contracts for a separate vote. Board member Roger Bostdorff voted against the motion. Briggs, who teaches on the Penta Career Center staff, has been an Eastwood junior varsity coach for three years.
Board member Randall Cajka voted against all the supplemental contracts. "I do take exception to the supplemental payment we're paying them," he said.
Also at the meeting, the board adjusted the 2009-10 calendar. Now, only Friday, Monday and Tuesday will be taken off for spring break, graduation is June 6 and the official end of school is May 28. Superintendent Brent Welker said the changes were needed because calamity days could be reduced to three. The state currently gives districts five calamity days that don't have to be made up if school is canceled because of bad weather. Welker said that could be reduced to three next year, then one, then zero. Also, if there are four bad weather days by President's Day next year, school will be held that Monday.
