Well the votes are in and two Bowling Green State University film students won't be walking the red carpet ... this year at least.
Nicole Lovince and Chad Courtney were semifinalists in the Oscar Correspondent Contest, sponsored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the folks who hand out the Oscars, and mtvU, MTV's 24-hour college network.
The contest offered a correspondent and a photographer a chance to be on the red carpet when the Oscars are handed out on Feb. 22 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.
While disappointed she and Courtney didn't move to the final three, she's pleased they progressed as far as they did in the contest, and she's not giving up hopes of being there again. A short interview clip was posted online and viewers go to vote for their favorites.
"I've always wanted to be a correspondent on the red carpet, so this would have been a dream come true," she said.
The New Orleans native said she's watched the Oscars forever, often with her father. In the past five years though, after she decided she wanted to purse a career in film, she became even more attentive.
Now the senior in film production is rooting for best picture nominees "Slumdog Millionaire" and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button." Her admiration of "Slumdog Millionaire" reflects her increasing appreciation of the art of film. While part of its appeal is that it showcases actors new to American audiences, she also liked the cinematography "the way the colors and lighting played into the mood."
Skillful camera work is what draws her to her teammate Courtney's work. Courtney has already scored credits for the films "Closed for the Season" and the short "Cold."
"He always sees exactly what I'm thinking," Lovince said.
"Benjamin Button" has a sentimental connection for her. Of all the people she may have encountered on the red carpet, she was most anxious to meet power couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. It's not just their glamour that attracts her though.
Following the devastation of New Orleans in Hurricane Katrina, Lovince said, "they've done so much for the city especially the lower Ninth Ward. They've rebuilt things out of their own pocket and never asked for anything in return."
Katrina is responsible in part for Lovince's arrival at BGSU.
Her immediate family weathered the storm, but many in her extended family lost their homes. Some of her friends moved north to Dayton following the hurricane, and after a year in a Louisiana school, she decided to transfer to a college with a stronger film program. BGSU fit the bill.
Now both she and Courtney will be graduating and will both move to the West Coast to pursue their careers.
First though Lovince said she'll spend the summer in her hometown working on an independent film.
From there she'll continue her journey to reach the red carpet.
