Perrysburg’s baseball team enhanced its already impressive résumé Monday.
Mark Delas had four hits and four runs batted in, and A.J. Stockwell pitched a three-hitter to lead the Yellow Jackets to an 8-1 victory over Bowling Green in a Northern Lakes League game. PHOTO GALLERY
The win, coupled with Anthony Wayne’s 12-11 loss to Maumee, gave the fifth-ranked Yellow Jackets no worse than a tie for the league championship.
Perrysburg is 12-1 in the NLL with one game remaining, and can wrap up its second league title in the last three seasons by beating Springfield.
The Perrysburg-Springfield game is scheduled for Saturday at Fifth Third Field in Toledo, but will be rescheduled if the Yellow Jackets beat Mansfield Madison in a district semifinal Thursday at Carter Park. The district final also is Saturday.
AW, a 3-2 winner at Perrysburg Friday, finished 12-2 in the NLL and needs a Yellow Jacket loss to Springfield to share the championship.
Perrysburg is 24-3 overall. BG is 14-11, 4-9, with one league game left, that also against Springfield (17-8, 6-5).
“We’re extremely happy, but we want to win it outright,” Perrysburg coach Dave Hall said. “You always want to come away with a title of some sort when you’ve played as well as we have and this gives us that.”
Against BG, Perrysburg scored three times in the first inning, twice in the second and once in the third for a 6-0 lead before the Bobcats scored.
Delas hit a two-run triple in the first, a two-run double in the second and singled twice.
Gus Dimmerling singled and doubled for Perrysburg, which had nine hits.
Stockwell struck out five and walked three, and his pitching was complemented by solid defense.
“We want to finish the league strong and keep our run going in the tournament,” Delas said.
Perrysburg didn’t play well in its last two games — the AW loss and a 5-3 win over Fremont Ross Thursday in its sectional championship game.
“We wanted to play well today and we did,” Delas said.
“This was big, to get a win after a loss when you haven’t lost many because you don’t know what their mind-set is going to be,” Hall said.
The Yellow Jackets had a 3-0 lead four batters into the game.
Delas lined a triple to right field to score Steve Slocum and Zach Honsberger. Slocum walked, took second on a wild pitch and moved to third on Honsberger’s single to right.
Delas scored on Stockwell’s bad-hop single to second.
“(Delas) pumped us a little bit with that shot,” Hall said. “When you get the lead that quickly, it takes the pressure off your pitching and fielders a little bit.”
Delas, who finished 4-for-5, hit a two-run, two-out double to right in the second. The hit scored Dimmerling, who doubled to left; and Honsberger, who walked.
“They put the ball in play hard,” BG coach Robert Yenrick said. “Give them full credit for everything they did.”
Five Yellow Jackets had hits, and seven players scored. Perrysburg’s final five runs came with two out.
“It was nice to get the lead and keep adding to it,” Hall said.
“We hit the ball well and we’re starting to get hot,” said Delas, who is hitting .407 in the third spot in the order.
Stockwell also pitched well, capitalizing on an excellent curveball. The junior left-hander no-hit Napoleon April 16.
He’s 7-0 with a 1.49 earned-run average.
“This was his best game outside of his no-hitter, especially considering what was on the line,” Hall said.
