COLUMBUS —Two Wood County wrestlers have moved on to the state tournament quarterfinals, Friday at Value City Arena.
Dalton Ishmael of North Baltimore and J.P. Newton of Perrysburg won their first round matches on Thursday.
In Division III at 195, Ishmael pinned Austin Kuchta of Elyria Catholic in the second period.
The first period was 1-0 for Ishmael with Kuchta fending off many of Ishmael’s attempts at takedowns. Kuchta was penalized for fleeing the mat.
In the second period Kuchta attempted a single-leg. While falling to his back, Ishmael countered with an under hook bridged off his back and rolled his opponent his back and pinned Kuchta in 3:43.
In Division I at 152, Newton pinned Wyatt Wilson of Moeller in 1:33. Newton scored a takedown and Wilson escaped. Newton scored again on a takedown and then pinned him.
In Division III at 126, Trenton Soto of Otsego used a great comeback win to advance in the consolation.
Soto lost to projected state champion Zack Nelson from Apple Creek Waynedale, 21-6 in round one. He met Joe Newman of Sandy Valley in the consolation. Trailing 7-0 after two periods, he scored eight points to tie in regulation. Soto countered a Newman takedown in overtime for a 10-8 victory.
In Division II at 170, Eastwood’s Randy Caris lost a tight, 5-4, match to Wyatt Running of Clinton-Massie in the first round and faced Mark Barron of New Philadelphia in the consolation.
Caris got off to a fast start with a quick takedown to score in the first period and added another in the second. Caris scored a takedown and nearfall in the final period to win, 9-1, and move on in consolation.
Two Perrysburg wrestlers advanced in consolation in Division I.
At 106 Mario Guillen dropped his first match to Jonathan Furnas of Olentangy Liberty, 9-4. Guillen lost four takedowns and could only scored on four escapes.
The Perrysburg freshman came back with a vengeance in the consolation against Dan Roth of Lakota East. Guillen used a takedown and four tilts to roll up a 12-point second period and moved on in consolation with a 12-3 victory.
Teammate Cale Bonner lost to Jon Morgan of Bedford, 3-1 in overtime in the first round. Bonner trailed at end of two periods 1-0 on the basis of an escape by Morgan. Morgan was penalized for stalling in the third, throwing the match into overtime. Morgan’s quick takedown at the whistle gave him the win.
It was some of the same for Bonner in the consolation. Bonner took Kevin Johnson of Elder down in the first with a cradle, but Johnson tied the match with two escapes. The second one threw the match in overtime. A stalling call on Johnson gave the win to Bonner.
Three county wrestlers failed to move on by losing both matches.
In Division III, Tyler Baer of Elmwood at 145 lost to Thomas Williams of Northridge 10-1 in round one. After dropping into the consolation he lost a closely contested bout, 5-3, to Drew Evertee of Dalton. Baer ends his senior year at 42-15.
C.J. Ball of Rossford dropped a close one at 120 in Division II in his first round to Garrett Carter of Akron St. Vincent St. Mary, 4-3. Ball was pinned in his second match by Cole Tawney of Gallica Academy. Ball ends his season at 33-7.
