SYLVANIA — After posting a 3-2 win over Southview in a highly-contested regular-season match, defense was the main concern for Perrysburg in the Division I district semifinal Thursday at Timberstone Junior High School.
The strategy worked as the Yellow Jackets smothered Southview’s Bethany Thomas and Lauren Micham on the way to a 4-0 victory.
‘‘The last time we played them, there were a couple of times we had some miscommunications, and we weren’t as confident last time as we were tonight,’’ said Perrysburg’s Andrea Wertz, a senior defender. ‘‘We definitely came out and corrected those errors.
‘‘They have really tough people up top with good foot skills,’’ she continued. ‘‘So to know we can handle them, we’re pretty prepared for what’s to come.’’
Jorge Diaz, co-head coach of the Yellow Jackets, said the team used three defenders against Thomas  and Micham.
‘‘We anticipated that we were going to win the balls, and everything was going to be OK,’’ Diaz said.
Perrysburg goalie Sara Baer had to make only one save in the match. It was the 11th shutout of the season, and fourth in the last five games, for the Yellow Jackets.
After the first 10 minutes of the match, Perrysburg was able to control the flow of play.
‘‘Not only did the defense harness those key players, we actually were patient. We would win the ball, and then make the smart play to transition offensively,’’ said Margaret Bernard, Perrysburg’s co-head coach. ‘‘We were really using the outsides today, and that really helped open things up and really created a ton of chances for us, so that was good.’’
On a goal kick by Southview, Perrysburg’s Allex Brown was able to control the ball and pass it forward to Lindy DeLong. DeLong’s low shot beat Southview goalkeeper Sophie Asah to her left side. The goal came with 23:56 left in the first half.
‘‘In the beginning of the season, we had trouble coming out in the first half. We would always score in the second half,’’ Wertz said. ‘‘Lately we have been coming out in the first half as hard as we can.’’
With 2:43 remaining in the half, DeLong found Beth Glowacki, who sent another low shot past Asah, who finished with six saves.
Lucy Walton, Brown and DeLong were keeping pressure on Southview from the wings, and Walton’s shot from the left side just snuck under the cross bar with 23:28 left in the game.
‘‘Southview packed the middle, and the two outsides that’s where our opportunities were ... and we took advantage of that,’’ Diaz said.
Becca Patterson closed out the scoring on a penalty kick with 6:50 remaining in the game.
Perrysburg, now 13-2-3, faces Anthony Wayne for the district title Saturday. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. at Timberstone.
‘‘We definitely know it’s going to be a tough game ... Both teams are playing good soccer,’’ Bernard said. ‘‘Mentally we have got to play our absolute best game, and leave everything on the field.’’
The first meeting between Perrysburg and Anthony Wayne this season, ended in a 1-1 tie. The Yellow Jackets and Generals tied for the Northern Lakes League title, both going 6-0-1.
‘‘There’s so much excitement. They have grown to be one of our biggest rivals, in the NLL, in anything,’’ Wertz said. ‘‘Last year we had to beat them in the tournament, and this year we’re ready to do it again."
Saturday’s winner advances to the regional semifinals Tuesday night at Lake High School against Notre Dame or Northview in a 7 p.m. start.
