There aren’t enough superlatives to describe how well Alec Schmenk pitched Thursday night.
But in a word, the Perrysburg junior was terrific. PHOTO GALLERY
Schmenk pitched a one-hitter and struck out nine to lead the third-ranked Yellow Jackets to a 2-0 victory over Ashland in the semifinals of the Division I district baseball tournament at Carter Park.
Perrysburg, 22-4 overall, scored the game’s only runs in bottom of the sixth to advance to Saturdays’s 2 p.m. district championship game against Northern Lakes League rival Anthony Wayne (15-8).
AW was a 3-1 winner over Sandusky in Thursday’s first game. Ashland is 17-8.
Schmenk faced only 24 batters, three over the minimum.
The only Arrows to reach base were Adam Schaly on a one-out walk in the second, Derrick Ward on a bloop single to center with one out in the fourth and Evan Dix on a one-out error in the sixth.
Dix was safe when Perrysburg’s first baseman dropped the throw on a ground ball to shortstop.
Schmenk, who drove in the game’s first run with a single, overpowered Ashland with an outstanding fastball. He threw 58 of his 81 pitches for strikes, and 77 of those pitches were fastballs. The other four were curveballs.
He had good movement on his pitches, and attacked up and in, and low and away.
“I could basically throw it wherever I wanted,” said Schmenk, who is 6-0 with a 0.46 earned-run average. “During warmups, I wasn’t feeling that great. But once the game started, the arm felt great. I just tried to keep it close until we could score.”
Schmenk already is receiving interest from college coaches, including Bowling Green and Toledo. He’s allowed just five runs (three earned) in 45 innings. He’s allowed 26 hits and eight walks, while striking out 48.
“That’s what he’s done all year,” Perrysburg coach Dave Hall said. “He’s one of the better pitchers around. He just spots the fastball wherever he wants it.”
Ashland’s Evan Dix also pitched well, allowing seven hits (all singles) with four coming in the sixth when Perrysburg scored its runs.
Matt Kruzel opened the Perrysburg sixth with a single to right and stole second on an 0-1 pitch. His second hit of the game barely made it past the second baseman, who had a nice diving attempt to his left.
After a walk to Matt Slocum, pinch-hitter Ryan Young bunted for a single.
Young, used as a pinch-hitter because of his excellent bunting ability and good speed, delivered the perfect bunt past the hard-charging Ashland defense and into the triangle between the mound, third and short.
“That was a great job off the bench (by Young),” Hall said. “That’s a tough spot to come in.”
Kruzel was forced out at the plate on a safety squeeze bunt for the first out.
But Schmenk followed on the next pitch with an opposite-field single to left through the hole between short and third with the infield in.
“I thought he’d come back with a fastball, so I figured I would swing,” Schmenk said. “I was trying to make contact, fight it off. You just want to put it in play and get a run in.”
Young scored on Matt Garbig’s infield single to second when the first baseman was late in covering the bag.
Perrysburg played well defensively with no errors. Shortstop Kevin Schenk had the team’s best defense play, catching a pop up in shallow left field with his back to home plate.
“We’ve been doing that all season,” Hall said of his team’s solid pitching and defense, and timely hitting.
The Yellow Jackets already have beaten AW twice this season, with Schmenk pitching Perrysburg to 2-0 and 2-1 wins. Hall said senior David Gordon (5-0, 0.91) will start Saturday.
