“It’s a great feeling, but an even greater feeling is getting a big win for our team,” Schmeltz said.
Eastwood is now 9-4, 5-2 and currently sits in third place in the NBC.
“It means a lot to be honest. It feels good to know I am going to be remembered at Eastwood forever in the record books’’ Schmeltz said.
Schmeltz needed 21 points to reach 1,000 coming into Wednesday’s game. He finished with 23 points and didn’t play at all during the fourth quarter.
“I tried not to think about it, but it popped into my head a little bit. I just tried to focus on the game,” he said.
Schmeltz was joined in double digits by teammates Grant Peters and Steven Bradley, who added 13 points apiece.
Cody Downs had 11 points for Otsego, 5-8, 3-4.
Eastwood pulled away from Otsego early-on with a 19-3 run to begin the second quarter. They led 32-9 with 3:15 remaining in the first half and didn’t allow Otsego into double-digit scoring until there were two minutes remaining in the half.
The Eagles’ lead increased to 40 with 1:54 remaining in the third quarter at 60-20.
The Knights got beat on fast breaks, back-door cuts and Eastwood earned easy layups off the pick-and-roll.
Eastwood’s defense held Otsego to single-digit scoring in all four quarters.
“We’ve been defending really well, and it’s really been a focus for us this season,” Eastwood coach Matt Routson said.
“We are long and athletic and we get in the passing lanes,” he said.
The Eagles also dominated the boards and held a 36-19 rebounding advantage.
“We had a lot of intensity tonight and we were ready to play,” Routson said.
Routson also credited Schmeltz for reaching his career milestone.
“He’s had a fantastic career at Eastwood and I can’t say enough about him and his work ethic,” Routson said.
Eastwood won the junior varsity game 40-30. Chris Orcutt had 12 points for Eastwood and Brant Kitchen had 13 for Otsego.
