NORTHWOOD - Northwood's football and baseball teams have won multiple Toledo Area Athletic Conference championships.
Jim Scharer believes the Rangers' boys basketball team can have similar success.
Scharer has been hired as the Rangers' head coach.
He replaces John Bryan, who was 7-35 overall and 5-21 in the TAAC during two seasons with the Rangers.
Northwood was 4-17, 3-11 last season.
"They've had success in football and baseball, and we want to catch a little of that and emulate their success," said Scharer, Genoa's junior varsity coach the last two seasons.
The two seasons before that, he was the head coach at Lake. He also has been an assistant coach at Fremont Ross.
"Winning is a mentality, and that mentality has been grounded here for a long time here in terms of TAAC championships," Scharer said of the football and baseball teams. "All we have to do is build a little bit of confidence and make sure we're committed to doing everything we can possibility to provide opportunities for these basketball players to be successful.
"I've always said Northwood had the potential to be a really fine job," Scharer said. "I don't think there's a better Division IV facility in Northwest Ohio. The kids have always had a mentality of toughness.
"I live a mile north of the school, the gym will be open any time a kid calls. When you have a vested interest in the community, it adds a great deal to your incentive to make the program successful."
The Rangers could return as many as five lettermen, including four starters, next season. Scharer already has had contact with 31 players (freshmen through seniors) about coming out for the team next season.
"We have some experience, and experience is a valuable, valuable thing," Scharer said.
The Rangers have had limited workouts this summer because the school's gym is under repair. They began full workouts this week.
"I want to set the tone for our defensive mentality, so we can compete in every single game," Scharer said of his goal for the summer workouts. "If you play outstanding defense, it increases your chances of winning. You might not always shoot the ball well and score every night, but we can play great defense every night. We'll play as much man-to-man defense as we can, but you have to play to your talent."
Scharer is no stranger to Northwood. His son, Erick, is a 2008 graduate of the school and played basketball.
Erick Scharer was Northwood's JV coach last season and he'll remain a member of the staff under his dad.
"I only saw a couple of games last year, but I would guess we'll probably play a little bit more pressure defense and a little faster offense," said Scharer.
Scharer, who turns 52 in July, teaches business at Fremont Ross where he's also the golf coach.
"It was a good opportunity just to kind of get away from the head coaching thing for a couple of years," Scharer said. "But that hunger comes back and you want to lead a program, and you want to seeĀ  the fruits of your labor pay off. I also think you have more of a vested interest in the program when you live in the community."
