GENOA — Quality pitching from Zach Foster wasn’t enough for Elmwood’s baseball team Saturday.
Unfortunately for the Royals, their bats were quiet over the final seven innings of a 3-2 nine-inning loss to Genoa in a Division III sectional semifinal on the Comets’ home field.
The Comets scored the winning run in the top of the ninth when Cody Pickard flared a two-out single to right field to score Logan Scott.
Scott singled up the middle, the third hit of the game for Genoa’s No. 9 hitter, with one out to start the rally. He stole second and had just enough time to beat the throw home on Pickard’s single.
The Comets’ winning run came after Elmwood bunted into an inning-ending double play on a suicide squeeze with runners on first and third and the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth.

TONTOGANY — Elmwood’s softball team fended off a seventh-inning threat Friday from Otsego, winning 8-4, to remain undefeated in the Northern Buckeye Conference.
The Royals are 17-4 overall and 8-0 in the NBC, while Otsego dropped to 10-8, 4-5.
The game showcased two of the NBC’s top pitchers, who are both sophomores: Elmwood’s Miranda Benschoter and Otsego’s Kylie Asmus. Benschoter had 11 strikeouts and Asmus, seven.
Ragan Yarnell was 3-for-4 for Elmwood. Asmus also was 3-for-4 with a double, home run and two runs batted in for Otsego.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Otsego, down 8-4, loaded the bases after Benschoter gave up two walks and a single. But the young pitcher remained poised and worked her way out of a tight spot.
