COLUMBUS — Perrysburg’s Jeffrey Schorsch was one set away from the state finals on Saturday.
Unfortunately for Schorsch, the Yellow Jacket junior came up short of a state championship.
Schorsch lost his semifinal match in three sets and then finished fourth overall at the Division I boys state tennis tournament at Ohio State University.
Schorsch lost his first match of the day in the semifinals in three sets to Lakota East’s Zach Mueck, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2. The match against Mueck was the only match of the tournament to go a full three sets.
“That first match took it out of him going three sets,” Perrysburg coach Mark Weider said, adding that Mueck was widely considered the overall favorite to win the state title.
“(Mueck) came out strong in that third set,” Weider added. “Jeffrey made a few mistakes that he normally doesn’t make and it shifted the first three games to Mueck. That quick he was down 3-0 in that third set.
“He fought the whole way. He came back and made a set of it in that first match, but came up short.”
The second day of the tournament was played in 90-degree heat, making it difficult for both Mueck and Schorsch in the their second matches of the day.
Schorsch lost the third-place match to Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit’s Aaron Sandberg, 6-2, 6-1.
This was Schorsch’s third appearance and best finish in the state tournament. Schorsch lost his first match in both previous appearances.
Schorsch earned first-team All-Ohio honors for reaching the semifinals this season.
“He accomplished some big goals that he had set for himself,” Weider said. “He set his goals high. He’d like to be the champion right now, but he’ll be coming back.”
Westlake’s Colton Buffington won the state championship, defeating Mueck, 6-2, 6-3 in the finals. This is the second straight season Mueck has finished second in the state. Both Buffington and Mueck are seniors, while Sandberg is a sophomore.
