PERRYSBURG — Perrysburg’s girls accomplished all they wanted to Saturday afternoon against Anthony Wayne.
The Yellow Jackets played dominating defense, got some payback for an earlier loss to the Generals, and senior Kelsea Newman reached 1,000 points in a 48-27 win.
Newman scored 13 points to lead all scorers and reach exactly 1,000 points for her career.
The 6-foot wing Newman, who has played a key role for Perrysburg since her freshman season, hit a step-back jumper from just inside the 3-point line with 1:35 left in the game to reach the milestone.  The game was stopped and Newman presented her father in the crowd with the game ball. Newman scored a game-high 13 points and has scored exactly 1,000 points in her career.
“At the beginning of the season I couldn’t even see it coming. Then today, they’re like, ‘You’re only 13 away.’ And I was like, ‘OK, I’ll go for it I guess,’” Newman said. “I didn’t come into high school thinking I’m going to score a 1,000 points ... I came in trying to make the Perrysburg program better, and I think I did that.
“I’ve just been practicing really hard ... It’s almost like a trophy,” she added. “It’s an extreme relief.”
Meanwhile, the ’Jackets played stifling defense in the teams’ second meeting this season. AW beat Perrysburg, 44-42 on Jan. 6.
Perrysburg held AW to 9-of-34 (26 percent) shooting for the game and limited the Generals to just 11 points in the first half. AW committed 15 of its 20 turnovers in the first half and were 0-for-7 from 3-point range.
“Defense, that’s what we do. We were suffocating,” Perrysburg coach Todd Sims said. “They had trouble getting the ball over half-court at the beginning of the game. Their point-guard was out, so obviously that affects them a little bit, but we played great defense.”
Although it was Newman taking center stage, Perrysburg was able to get a balanced attack on offense.
Senior Emily Treece finished with 12 points and five rebounds, and sophomore Sarah Baer added 10 points and six boards for Perrysburg. Taylor Knight had five points and three steals, and Newman added four steals and seven rebounds for the ’Jackets.
“We’d lost to them the last three times we played them, so we owed them something,” Newman said of AW. “We can depend on more than one person. We play really well as a team.”
Newman is the third girl in Perrysburg history to reach 1,000 points. Nicole Parrish reached the milestone in 2008 and Laura Markwood reached it in 2004. Markwood holds the school record with 1,635 career points, scoring 1,311 of those points after transferring from Toledo Christian.
“It’s a great accomplishment. They’ve been playing girls basketball here for 30, 40 years, and to be only the third one ever to score 1,000 points is amazing,” Sims said.
“She’s developed so much from her freshman year to now. She’s a much more well-rounded player,” Sims added of Newman. “She’s able to post now. She handles the ball better now. She’s able to attack the basket now, where her freshman and sophomore year she was strictly a 3-point shooter, but now she’s an all-around, very good basketball player.”
Aubrie Kreft led AW (8-8, 5-6) with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Perrysburg is back in action on Monday in a non-league game at Toledo Bowsher.
The ’Jackets won the junior varsity game, 48-32. Monica Dorner led the ’Jackets with 12 points.
