PERRYSBURG —As a sophomore, Sarah
Baer was an honorable mention all-league choice in basketball. Now a senior, Baer is a much-improved player,
earning second-team All-Ohio honors as a junior. Her quick improvement, helped by Todd Sims and the
Perrysburg coaching staff, along with playing off-season basketball with Toledo Elite, has helped earn Baer
a college scholarship. On Wednesday, Baer signed her national letter of intent to attend Bowling Green State
University to continue her academic and athletic career.‘‘I am extremely excited. I can’t even believe that
it’s actually happening, that it’s official,’’ said the 6-foot-1 Baer.Baer said BGSU was her college choice
ever since she was a young girl.‘‘It’s close to home. My parents went there and they loved it. My sister
goes there; it’s just so nice,’’ Baer said.Sims expects big things from Baer in her college career.‘‘When
she gets to Bowling Green, I think the sky is the limit for her,’’ Sims said.‘‘She went from one extreme to
the other in one year,’’ Sims added. ‘‘And we’ve already seen improvement from last year to this season …
she can be as good as she wants to be.’’A first-team All-Wood County selection, Baer averaged 13.4 points
and 7.6 rebounds per game as a junior for the Yellow Jackets.‘‘We play to her strengths. We are a full-court
team, that’s what she’s the best at,’’ Sims said. ‘‘She is so athletic for a post-player, she can run the
court.’’Baer said her improvement from her sophomore year to her junior season, was a result of hard
work.‘‘It was just about how bad I wanted it,’’ Baer said. ‘‘When I was a sophomore starting on varsity, I
was really nervous. When I got the confidence, I just wanted to strive for this; I wanted a scholarship. I
wanted to play college basketball. I loved it, and I really wanted it.’’This season, Baer looks to improve
on her weaknesses, while helping Perrysburg compete for a league title, and make a long tournament run.Baer
was a member of the 2012 state champion Perrysburg soccer team, and she was the starting goalie on the team
this fall.
