Perrysburg senior Sarah Baer has verbally committed to play basketball at Bowling Green State University.
Baer, a 6-foot-1 post, accepted a scholarship offer in May.
"I'm really happy about it all. It's a relief now that it's actually happened," Baer said in a telephone interview.
"It's where I've always wanted to go. I didn't really consider anybody else," she added.
Baer, who averaged 13.4 points and 7.6 rebounds per game as a junior, took a visit to the University at Buffalo while also gauging interest from a handful of Division II schools. But the decision to choose BG was an easy one.
"My parents went there and my sister goes there. So it being only 10 minutes away is perfect," Baer said.
"It was awesome, I was so happy when it was happening," she added of the recruitment process.
According to Perrysburg head coach Todd Sims, Baer's hard work on the floor helped her earn her scholarship.
"Our program has been good for a long time, and that helps to get your name across the state," Sims said. "But I've got to give her 95 percent credit for as hard as she works.
"Sarah does things that you can't coach," he added. "You can't coach them to run like she does. You can't coach them to jump and be athletic. ... It's just a God-given ability and hard work."
When she gets to BG, Baer will join a program that has seen multitudes of success over the years.
The Falcons, under second-year head coach Jennifer Roos, compiled a 24-11 record last year, including 11-5 in the Mid-American Conference.
BG advanced to the third round of the WNIT before losing to eventual champion Drexel by three points. It was the ninth consecutive national postseason appearance for BG, which is a MAC record.
The excitement was evident when Baer was asked what it would be like to join a team that has a long-standing winning tradition like BG. So much excitement that she could barely put it into words.
"It's something that I've always wanted to do."
