PERRYSBURG – Perrysburg’s
girls golf team had a rebuilding season last fall. The Yellow Jackets are striving to reap the benefits
of their work this season. They return five players from last season when they finished 7-3 overall and
5-0 in the Northern Lakes League, and tied for second in the league’s overall standings.Among the
returnees are senior and four-year letter winner Monica Dorner, the medalist in the NLL tournament and a
first-team all-league pick last season; and sophomore Katie Diehl, a third-team All-NLL honoree last
season.Even though the Yellow Jackets had a successful season last fall, they were coming off NLL
overall and tournament championships in 2011.The overall championship is determined from points awarded
for each dual-match win and a team’s finish in the league tournament. The Yellow Jackets also advanced to
the district tournament in 2011, but graduated five of the top six players from that team."We got a
lot of needed experience last year and that can only help us,’ said Dorner, the team’s
captain.Perrysburg’s other returning letter winners this season are senior Katie Krieger, and sophomores
Macy Tudor and Madison Williams."We’ve really worked hard to improve during the offseason,"
Williams said. "All of us have played a lot this summer and we played indoors during the
winter.""We’re playing well right now," Diehl said. "Everyone’s shown a lot of
improvement."Last season’s NLL titles were split as Northview won the overall championship and
Anthony Wayne claimed the tournament title."There’s no question we’re an improved team from last
year and the girls are far more mature than what they were last year," said Perrysburg coach Rick
Rettig, who is in his ninth season. "This team has no much potential. Our focus is on being
mentally tough and focused, and getting an eye of the tiger attitude. They’re such nice girls, it’s
almost a fault."I would love for them to be more aggressive and have more of an I’m going to take
what’s mine attitude and that kind of an approach … getting them to have some fearlessness, some
swagger, that’s what I want to do. If I can do that and if they can get to that point mentally at the
end of the year, I like our chances."Although Perrysburg has five letter winners on its 12-player
roster, it still has a young team with only three seniors to go along with five sophomores and four
freshmen."Our goal is to improve each day, come out better and stronger every time we hit the
course," Dorner said. "Winning the league is always in the back of our mind, but as a team,
it’s about the present and getting better each day.""We’re going to have good competition for
spots during our tryouts and all through the season," Rettig said. "That will make the team
better."The Wood County girls high school golf capsules are on page 10.
