Some teams thrive in the underdog role.
Put the Perrysburg girls in that category this season.
The Yellow Jackets return one starter from a team which went 18-4 overall and 12-2 in the Northern Lakes League last season.
On the other hand Bowling Green returns all five starters from last season and is a candidate to win the NLL title.
The Yellow Jackets proved they are still a force in the NLL, posting a big season-opening road win, downing Bowling Green, 52-41, Friday night. PHOTO GALLERY
“It was big for us because we’re the underdogs this year, apparently,” said Perrysburg’s Becca Tudor, a senior. “We definitely wanted it. It feels good.”
Bowling Green made a 6-0 run early in fourth quarter to take a 39-37 lead with 5:47 left in the game.
Kelsea Newman, Perrysburg’s returning starter and a Division I recruit to Youngstown State, nailed a 3-pointer with 5:34 left to put her team ahead to stay.
The triple started a 12-0 run as BG did not score for a span of 3:59. Samantha Gremler, who came off the bench for the ’Jackets, scored all five of her points in the run.
“That gave us the drive to finish (the game) and get the job done,” Tudor said about the 12-0 run.
Jenna Stoner made two free throws for BG with 1:48 left, but the outcome was decided at that point.
“I’m a little disappointed. I thought we would shoot the ball a little bit better,” said BG head coach Jeff Nichols. “I give credit to them, they played a nice game defensively.”
Perrysburg used its height-advantage to dominate on the boards. The Yellow Jackets start three 6-footers and Gremler is 5-11.
“One of our keys to victory was to try to beat them up in the paint,” Perrysburg head coach Todd Sims said. “That’s definitely the way we played here. We always seem to have very good post players and very active post players ... We have a good rebounding team.”
“We gave them too many second-chance points,” Nichols said. “We just didn’t do a good job of checking them out. They are taller than us at three or four positions, but a lot of it is just working for position.
“That height wore on us and we got out of our rhythm shooting.”
The Yellow Jackets also did a good job defending BG’s Hayley Williford, who finished with seven points. She was coming off a career-high 30-point performance against Eastwood last Friday.
Taylor Knight got the call to defend Williford.
“We played man-to-man. We tried to play her tight. We tried to make her dribble, because she is a very good catch-and-shoot player,” Sims said. “Defense for us is trying to make someone do something they are not comfortable with. And she is not comfortable off the dribble. She can still do it, because she is such a good player. But if you had to choose one of the two, she is a better spot shooter.”
Perrysburg scored the first seven points of the game, but BG stayed close and the Yellow Jackets led 15-12 after eight minutes.
The Bobcats broke a 19-19 tie with a 7-3 run to take a 26-22 lead with 1:56 left in the first half. The Yellow Jackets scored the final two baskets of the half to make it 26-26 at the break.
The third quarter was a sluggish affair and Perrysburg took a 35-33 lead into the final eight minutes.
After BG made its run in the final quarter, Perrysburg pulled away for the win.
“They controlled the tempo. We weren’t able to play they way we wanted to play,” Nichols said. “I give them credit, but I’m also disappointed that we didn’t step up and make some shots.”
Tudor led Perrysburg with 13 points, including nine in the first half, Newman finished with 11 and Knight scored 10.
“We only return one starter, but we have players who have played in really big games the last couple of years,” Sims said. “They have been around it, but you never know as a coach because starting is a little different than coming off the bench. And it’s on the road against a team that is returning everybody they are returning.
“It’s a very good win for us.”
Stoner was active around the basket and finished with a team-high 12 points for the Bobcats, now 1-1.
In the junior varsity game, Perrysburg rallied to out-score Bowling Green 17-4 in the fourth quarter to post a 49-43 victory. Alex Brown and Katie Dunphy each scored 12 points for Perrysburg. Hanna Williford led BG with 15 points and Reagan Morman added 10 points.
