The Yellow Jackets made entirely too many mistakes to win against a quality opponent, and the result was a 44-42 loss, their first defeat of the season. “They out-played us,” Perrysburg coach Todd Sims said. “We didn’t deserve to win that game ... We almost had a chance to steal it.” Despite perhaps its poorest performance of the season, Perrysburg (7-1 overall, 3-1 Northern Lakes League) did, indeed, have a chance to win at the end. Kelsea Newman hit a clutch 3-pointer from well behind the arc to tie the game at 42-42 with 21 seconds remaining, but the ’Jackets then fouled AW (4-4, 2-2) nearly 25 feet from the basket with 5.4 seconds in the game. The Generals’ Sara Zankl then sank both foul shots to take a two-point lead. Perrysburg point-guard Taylor Knight then took the ensuing in-bounds pass the length of the court and got a contested look near the paint, but her shot bounced off the backboard and in and out of the basket as time expired. “Kelsea made a huge three to tie the game,” Sims said. “But they made the plays. They made free throws. I don’t know how many one- or two-footers we missed wide open. “It’s always a battle when you play them. They’re well-coached. They do some very good things.” In a matchup that has become a heated rivalry in the NLL in recent years, both teams struggled offensively as defense and physicality were the main themes throughout the game. The teams combined for nearly 50 turnovers, with both teams committing 24. Perrysburg and AW combined for 30 turnovers in the first half alone. Free throws proved to play a huge role, as AW finished 15-of-17 (88 percent) from the charity stripe while Perrysburg was just 14-of-24 (58 percent). “We have no rhythm right now,” Sims said. “We’re just so herky-jerky on offense, too many turnovers, and we didn’t make enough plays.” Newman finished with a game-high 24 points, including a 10-of-12 showing from the foul line and four made 3-pointers. Sarah Baer added nine points, seven rebounds and four steals before fouling out with 2:30 left in the fourth quarter. But other than Newman and Baer, the rest of Perrysburg’s players combined to score nine points in the game as the ’Jackets finished shooting 26.6 percent (12-of-45) from the floor. Perrysburg went 6-of-17 from the field in the first half and held a 20-19 lead at halftime behind 14 points from Newman. “What I said at halftime is other people need to step up and score,” Sims said. “It can’t be a one- or two-person show against good teams. That’s OK against whoever, but against quality teams we need some more rhythm and flow on offense.” Aisha Tyre led AW with 16 points, and all seven Generals who saw playing time scored at least three points. Aubrie Kreft had a game-high 12 rebounds for AW, and Zankl added eight points. “They out-played us ... I told the girls that and they all agreed,” Sims said. “We almost stole one, but as far as just playing and getting after it ... we did the last few minutes of the game. “We got real scrappy there, but other than that we were just kind of hoping the clock would run out with us ahead, and that’s not going to work against good teams.” Perrysburg faces league-leading Northview (8-1, 4-0) next Friday in Sylvania. The Northview game will start an important stretch of four games in eight days for the ’Jackets. “You get better. That’s all you can do,” Sims said. “We’ll go back and practice Monday and get ready for Northview ... But if we don’t play better as a team things aren’t going to work out like we hope they work out. “If we stay where we are right now, by the end of the season then we’re not going anywhere. We have to keep getting better, and we will.” Perrysburg won the junior varsity game, 48-41. Allex Brown led Perrysburg with 12 points.
