PERRYSBURG — Sometimes it’s the less glamorous aspects of the game that make the difference.
That was again the case for Perrysburg’s girls Tuesday against Bowling Green.
The Yellow Jackets clamped down on the Bobcats’ offense and dominated on the boards, recording an important 46-29 win at Perrysburg High School.
“We’re understanding what our strengths are,” Perrysburg coach Todd Sims said. “We’re experienced ... We’re a very good defensive team. We’re aggressive. We’re physical. We can bang with teams. PHOTO GALLERY
“That’s what we do best. We’ll throw in some baskets here and there.”
With the win Perrysburg improved to 10-3 overall and 6-2 in the Northern Lakes League,  moving into sole possession of second place. The ’Jackets trail league-leading Northview (13-1, 8-0) by two full games with one game remaining against the Wildcats.
BG (9-4, 5-3) will now likely have to settle for playing a spoiler role the rest of the way. The Bobcats were coming off a 74-61 loss at Northview last Friday.
“It’s frustrating. I think everybody they play they out-rebound, and we just didn’t have an answer for it tonight,” BG coach Jeff Nichols said of Perrysburg. “They play a real physical defensive game. They like to get up in your face. We knew that coming in.
“With the inability to rebound, we were getting one shot and now we’ve got to play defense,” he continued. “Even though the defensive effort was really good, when you’re playing defense all the time you’re going to end up giving up some points, and that’s what happened.”
Perrysburg senior Kelsea Newman finished with a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds, as the ’Jackets held a 40-27 advantage in rebounding, including 13 on the offensive end.
Senior Emily Treece added 10 points and nine boards, and fellow senior Becca Tudor chipped in with seven points and six boards. Sophomore Sarah Baer added seven rebounds and three steals for the ’Jackets while senior Taylor Knight had five assists.
“It’s something we work on at practice,” said Newman of Perrysburg’s rebounding prowess. “That’s how we hustle and we try to show that every game.
“We definitely focus on defense because defense wins games,” she added. “If we play good defense then the offense will come.”
Perrysburg scored the first nine points of the game, behind two 3-pointers from Newman, and led 12-4 after the first quarter. BG responded in the second, cutting the lead to 12-7 after a triple by senior Hayley Williford.
But BG’s bench was assessed a technical on Perrysburg’s next possession after a foul call on the Bobcats, and Perrysburg made 3-of-4 free throws before getting the ball back.
Tudor then scored with 4:10 left in the second to give Perrysburg a 17-7 lead. It was essentially a five-point possession for the ’Jackets, who never trailed in the game.
BG was within six points when senior Jenna Stoner made a basket to cut the lead to 21-15 to open the third quarter. But the ’Jackets went on a 13-3 run over the next six minutes to push their lead to 34-18 when Knight drilled a 3-pointer with 1:35 left in the quarter.
Stoner led the Bobcats with eight points and Williford finished with seven points.
“As you go through the third quarter and you’re working so hard to try to get a finish that’s not going in ... It’s high school basketball, kids are going to get a little disappointed, a little bit depressed about that,” Nichols said. “Then I thought we gave up a few easy ones and they just started to expand on us a little bit.”
Now the Bobcats, who many saw as one of the favorites for the league championship this season, will need to win out and have Northview lose three times to share the title. BG is at Napoleon on Saturday and plays Northview again Feb. 18.
“We played Northview and Perrysburg back to back. That’s tough and we didn’t come up on the good end of the sticks,” Nichols said. “So we regroup and we try to win out until we get to Northview, and maybe if we don’t win the race we can affect who does.
“We haven’t put a lot of stock, time and talk into we have to finish first or we have to finish second. We’re just enjoying what’s going on and being part of the mix. If we take care of our business the rest of the way, whatever happens, happens.”
Up next for Perrysburg is a home game with Southview on Saturday. The ‘Jackets need to win their final six NLL games, including one against Northview, and have the Wildcats lose one other league game for a chance to share the title.
“We’ve mentioned that briefly here and there, but not very often, because obviously you’re looking forward to who you play next,” Sims said. “We can’t control what happens with (Northview). We’re looking at Southview right now.”
Perrysburg’s junior varsity team won its 62nd consecutive game, coming from behind to post a 31-28 win. Allex Brown led Perrysburg with 14 points and Livvy Dill led the Bobcats with 10 points.

Maybe this should be a hint that this program needs a coaching change. No more of the good ole boys network!

I agree shane! If BG is ever going to be competitive again in HS athletics let alone girls basketball than a complete overhaul needs to be done. The admin needs to start at the top with the so called Athletic Directior/Dean of Students and look at each and every person that coaches at BGHS and evaluate their knowledge and success of the sport that they coach. Some of these coaches, as well as the Athletic Director have been in place for 3 decades and I definitely have not seen that many competitive/winning teams come out of BGHS. Athletic teams are a product of their coaches, need I say more. BG is losing kids left and right to high schools in Toledo because BG is no place to play if you want to be noticed for your athletic talents. Some things never change and as long as the good ole boys are in charge, nothing will ever change.
