SYLVANIA — Two games into its season and Perrysburg has two Northern Lakes League wins.
Friday night at Southview the ’Jackets saw a 13-point fourth quarter lead dwindle to as little as six, but Perrysburg’s free-throw shooting down the stretch allowed it to walk away with a 55-48 victory.
“We don’t return a lot of starters, but we have players that have played in these (types of) games,” Perrysburg head coach Todd Sims said. “It’s a little different starting ... You sort of have to get used to playing those and get your feet wet. But we did fine. We fought them off.”
Perrysburg senior Kelsea Newman, a threat from the perimeter, adjusted her game to drive inside to the basket instead of settling for outside shots.
Newman led the ‘Jackets with 22 points, which included Perrysburg’s lone basket from beyond the arc.
As a result of her going inside, Newman was able to get to the foul line consistently, and she made Southview (3-1, 1-1) pay by making nine of her 10 attempts from the stripe.
“It’s kind of what I’ve been working on because I’m basically known just to shoot the 3-pointer. I knew I needed to make my game a little more diverse,” Newman said.
“I knew they were going to defend my three because that’s kind of what I’m known for. I knew that driving was going to be my key,”  Newman added.
Not only did Newman consistently work the inside, so did the rest of her team.
Perrysburg hit 16 shots from inside the 3-point arc and was able to make 31 trips to the charity stripe by feeding its players down low all night.
“As long as I’ve coached here, we’re always inside-out,” Sims said. “We try to get something in, and if they double or whatever, then we can kick it out. As aggressive as Southview is, on the perimeter it’s hard to get open shots.”
Sarah Baer was Perrysburg’s other threat inside.
The 6-foot sophomore scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, six of which were offensive.
In all, the ’Jackets pulled down 15 offensive rebounds, allowing them to take advantage of second-chance points.
“We missed some put-backs and stuff that maybe we normally make, but we scrapped and fought, and that’s how you win these games, especially on the road,” Sims said.
Perrysburg’s defense was also outstanding throughout the game, forcing the Cougars into 26 turnovers.
Taylor Knight had a daunting task for the second consecutive game, as she was matched up with Southview’s best player, Lexi Lopez.
Lopez finished with a team-high 15 points and nine rebounds, but she was strongly contested all night.
In Perrysburg’s first game, Knight guarded Bowling Green’s Hayley Williford, and held her to seven points.
“Taylor has done a great job defensively. And we’re a very good defensive team,” Sims said. “That’s where we start. Nothing happens without defense.”
With 4:07 left in the game, the 'Jackets held their largest lead, 46-33.
Perrysburg suddenly found itself fouling and turning the ball over, giving the Cougars a chance to make a comeback.
But the 'Jackets regrouped in the final two minutes, and Newman, Baer and Becca Tudor each knocked down key free throws to seal the win.
“We’re going to scrap and we’re going to fight. To me that’s 80 percent of basketball,” said Sims. “If you’re not willing to fight, then you’re not going to be any good. And we fought.”
Perrysburg won the junior varsity game 37-31. Lindy Delong led the 'Jackets with 12 points and Monica Dorner added 11.
