It's a task that Perrysburg's girls tennis team will try to achieve this season. Last year's Yellow Jackets, who had six seniors, performed well throughout the season with an 11-6 dual record and a 6-1 record in the Northern Lakes League, setting themselves up for a shot at a ninth consecutive NLL title. But Perrysburg was stunned in the league's postseason tournament losing to Anthony Wayne by one point, thus ending its streak of dominance. "There's always a little bit of sadness and thinking, 'Oh if we could have done this and this.' But I always try to look at the positive," said Perrysburg head coach Julie Weider. "We had a great season … You can only do so much about the losses. You look at the success that you had and realize that it was a good year." Now the Yellow Jackets are forced to bounce back with a new-look team, which consists of four returning letter winners - Seniors Mackenzie Hayes and Grace Conley, and juniors Jaden Northcutt and Jordan Spidel. "It's a rebuilding year per say because there will be players on varsity this year that weren't on varsity last year," said Weider, who is beginning her fourth year at the helm of the girls program. "There are freshmen coming in that have the potential to make varsity and I think that we're going to come out with a strong team, she added." Hayes and Conley are trying to do their part in making sure that everyone on the team gets along no matter the age of the players. "We have a lot of young people, which is nice because so many people left and it's like a fresh team. It's a very positive atmosphere," Hayes said. "Tennis is such an individual sport and we're trying to make it more of a team sport," Conley added. Hayes and Conley agreed along with Weider that senior leadership and the depth of this year's team will play a huge role in being able to reach Perrysburg's goal, which is to get back to the top of the NLL. "It's going to be tough just choosing our varsity team," Weider said. "What we have is a very even team. We're going to have probably 10 girls on varsity where there's no real standouts like we've had in the past," she added. That's a positive. They're all going to be able to play singles or doubles. "Our goal is always to win the NLL. We have a good chance, mainly because of that depth. Every position is going to be equally important," said Weider. The tennis capsules are on page 13 today. |
