PERRYSBURG — A poor shooting effort in the second half and overtime haunted Perrysburg’s boys basketball team against Springfield, Tuesday night in The Arena at Perrysburg High School.
The Yellow Jackets recorded just one field goal in the final 17 minutes and seven seconds of a 45-42 overtime loss to the Blue Devils.
With the loss, Perrysburg falls to 10-4 overall and 6-2 in the Northern Lakes League, one game behind NLL-leader Anthony Wayne (11-2, 7-1). Springfield is 9-4, 5-3.
Perrysburg’s Shane Edwards recorded a steal and turned it into a breakaway layup with 21.2 seconds left in overtime, cutting Springfield’s lead to 43-42. It was the first basket, from the field, for the ’Jackets since there was 5:07 left in the third quarter.
Springfield extended its lead to 45-42 with a pair of free throws with 17.4 seconds on the clock. The Blue Devil’s fouled Perrysburg’s Bryant Byrd with two seconds remaining, with the ’Jackets in the double bonus. Neither of the free throws were converted but Perrysburg still got one more shot, trailing by three.
Edwards’ contested three, from about 21 feet, as time expired went begging off the front off the rim after the ensuing Blue Devil inbound was thrown out of bounds, giving Perrysburg an opportunity to tie.
The missed three meant the end of the game, and it also meant that Perrysburg had missed its final nine shots from beyond the arc. The ’Jackets were 3-of-15 from 3-point territory in the game.
“The fact of the matter is we didn’t shoot very well,” said Perrysburg head coach Dave Boyce.
The ’Jackets, having scored an average of 69.2 points per game in their previous six games, shot just 14-of-42 (33 percent) from the field.
Their 42 points was their lowest point total since a 55-49 loss to Toledo Whitmer on Dec. 27.
“We, offensively didn’t get it done,” Boyce said. “We didn’t get it done inside. We didn’t get it done on the fastbreak. We didn’t get it done mid-range and we didn’t get it done from the three.”
Perrysburg jumped out to an early 9-0 lead and eventually led 23-18 at the half. It held a 32-24 lead until their dry spell hit, and the ’Jackets went on to miss their next 14 shots from the field until Edwards’ layup in overtime.
By the end of the third quarter it was just a 33-32 Perrysburg lead after Springfield’s Curtis Hassell collected a steal and went coast-to-coast for the layup.
“Our guys didn’t come out with a whole lot of energy and dug a hole, and then we just kept grinding away from there,” said Springfield head coach Stan Joplin.
The Blue Devils took their first lead of the game with 6:18 left in regulation when Hassell hit a triple from the left corner, giving them a 35-33 advantage.
Perrysburg regained the lead briefly after Nick Moschetti knocked down two free throws, thanks to a Springfield technical foul, with 2:23 left in regulation, putting the ’Jackets ahead 37-35.
But Perrysburg could do nothing on their next possession, turning it over to Springfield, a common theme for the second half.
Moschetti scored a game-high 16 points, while Edwards added 11.
With 1:42 left in regulation Springfield tied it at 37-37 and Perrysburg tried to hold out for the last shot. But a turnover with 18 seconds left gave Springfield a chance, only to be denied at the buzzer.
Perrysburg had 15 turnovers for the game, many unforced such as the one at the end of regulation. Ten of those turnovers came in the second half and overtime.
“We made a lot of bad decisions, and when we made bad decisions it contributed to a loss of confidence,” Boyce said. “Then we made some good decisions and missed some easy shots and before you knew it we were pretty out of sync.”
Perrysburg won the junior varsity game 45-36. Connor Jordan led the ’Jackets with 17 points, while Kenny Zimmerman added 10.
