MAUMEE — One big inning was enough for Perrysburg’s baseball team to remain undefeated in the Northern Lakes League.
The Yellow Jackets scored six runs in the top of the fourth inning Wednesday to erase a 3-1 deficit on the way to a 7-4 win over Maumee.
Perrysburg, ranked fifth in Division I, is 16-1 overall and 6-0 in the NLL. It’s the only undefeated team in the league. PHOTO GALLERY
Maumee, the preseason favorite to win the league, is 2-4 in the NLL.
During the rally, the Yellow Jackets had four hits and were helped by two walks and a Maumee error that resulted in five unearned runs.
Perrysburg also scored on a wild pitch and a passed ball during the inning.
Gus Dimmerling and Steve Slocum had RBI singles to drive in Perrysburg’s first two runs in the inning, and Kyle Durham later added a two-run single.
Perrysburg’s big inning came after Maumee’s Steve Duby lined a bases-loaded triple in the bottom of the third to give his team a 3-1 lead.
“Our kids responded really well after we got behind,” said Perrysburg coach Dave Hall, whose team has won 13 straight games.
The Yellow Jackets are hitting .333 and scoring 8.2 runs per game.
“We didn’t panic and stayed calm,” said Slocum, who singled three times and scored twice. “We’re a good hitting team and we knew we could come back.”
The Yellow Jackets had success against Duby, who dominated Perrysburg in a sectional championship game at Carter Park last season.
The 6-foot right-hander threw a no-hitter and struck out 10 in the Panthers’ 4-0 win. He allowed just two hitters to reach base, one on a walk and one on a hit by pitch. Duby already has committed to pitch at West Virginia.
But the Yellow Jackets had different results Wednesday.
Perrysburg scratched out a run in the top of the first when Slocum drew a leadoff walk, took second on Austin Lee’s sacrifice bunt, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Mark Delas’ infield out.
“That was a big run after what he did to us last year,” Hall said.
Perrysburg also had runners at second and third with two out in the third before its big rally in the fourth.
Duby eventually left after 5 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and one earned run with three strikeouts and three walks. He threw 94 pitches.
“We were patient and wanted to get his pitch count up there, and we did that,” Hall said. “Our kids were very patient and when he did come in with a strike, we adjusted and hit the ball the other way.
“We had a good approach,” Hall added. “We got into a lot of 3-1, 3-2 counts an we got him talking to himself a little bit.”
Perrysburg capitalized on “Hall Ball” with four sacrifice bunts and a bunt single in the game. Three of the five bunts figured in the scoring.
The Yellow Jackets had eight hits in the game and Maumee made four errors.
“We went into the game knowing we were going to bunt from inning one and force them to make plays,” Hall said. “We didn’t hit the ball all over the ballpark. We just did what we do and that’s manufacture runs.”
The Yellow Jackets’ played errorless defense, although Maumee’s three runs came after Perrysburg threw late to second on a rundown, allowing a Panther to be safe at second. Three batters later, Duby tripled.
Perrysburg’s A.J. Stockwell and Delas combined on a seven-hitter, striking out five and walking three.
Delas held Maumee scoreless on no hits over the final 1 2/3 innings.
