SYLVANIA — Bowling Green showed resilience and perseverance Friday night against Northview.
However, the Bobcats could not contain Northview’s option-game and speed, which resulted in six explosive offensive plays of 20 yards or more,
After the Bobcats rallied from two touchdowns down to tie the game at 28, Northview’s Preston McCurdy ran 57 yards for a TD with 2:08 remaining in regulation to break the tie. The Wildcats then scored on an interception return to record the 42-28 victory.
‘‘We were down 28-14 and our kids battled back,’’ BG head coach Scott Seeliger said. ‘‘I told them after the game, you guys are so close, but there is not a lot of margin for error.
‘‘We’ve got to be right almost every time.’’
The Bobcats had a potent passing attack as Ricky Riggs was 15-of-28 for 221 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.
Ryan Emans was Riggs’ main target, finishing with nine receptions for 168 yards and two touchdowns.
‘‘Our offensive line really protected, and gave us time to throw the football,’’ Seeliger said. ‘‘We made some good throws and catches. We had some more that we so close.
‘‘The last two games, offensively, we have been able to do some good things,’’ Seeliger added.
However, Northview countered Bowling Green’s passing attack with a strong running attack as McCurdy finished with 173 yards on 22 carries and Corey Donnelly had 13 carries for 176 yards.
McCurdy scored four touchdowns, two rushing, one receiving, and the other on a 90-yard kickoff return. Donnelly scored on a 69-yard run.
‘‘They have more speed than we do,’’ Seeliger said. ‘‘When we make a mistake, like we’re not on the pitch guy, then he’s gone. We don’t have the guys that can come over and make up for a mistake.
‘‘We can’t practice against that speed, and we can’t get the feel for it,’’ Seeliger said. ‘‘We try to have the scout team give a look on that, but we were not able to.’’
Bowling Green scored on its first two possessions of the game. Riggs hit Emans with a 24-yard TD pass and Doug Espen scored on a 21-yard run. Espen finished with 96 yards on 13 carries.
After Emans’ TD, McCurdy tied the game with his kickoff return.
After Espen’s score, Northview moved 71 yards in eight plays to tie the game on an 11-yard pass from Brenden Pierson to McCurdy.
On the ensuing possession after Northview tied the game, Bowling Green was stopped on downs on a fourth-and-short play at the Wildcats’ 24-yard line with 9:37 to play in the first half.
The failure to convert put the Bobcats off track as Northview scored the next two touchdowns to take a 28-14 lead.
‘‘That was where the defense had to hold them, and they weren’t able to,’’ Seeliger said.
The Bobcats got back in the game when Andy Fisher’s punt pinned Northview inside the 5-yard line late in the third quarter. The Wildcats fumbled on their first play after the punt, and BG recovered.
Three plays later, Espen scored on a 1-yard run and with Fisher’s PAT, the Bobcats were within 28-21 with 13 seconds left in the third quarter..
Bowling Green stopped Northview on the ensuing possession, and Emans caught a 38-yard scoring pass from Riggs. With Fisher’s PAT, the game was tied 28 with 6:43 left in regulation.
Riggs hit Emans on a slant pattern, as Emans had lined up wide left. Emans slipped between two defenders to find the end zone.
After both teams punted on their next possession. Northview went 87 yards in just three plays to take the lead for good. McCurdy scored on a 57-yard run down the sideline with 2:08 remaining to play.
Northview’s Derek Hullibarger then returned an interception 33 yards to seal the victory.
Both teams are 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the NLL.
