COLUMBUS — Dalton Ishmael’s high school wrestling journey has come to an end,But it wasn’t the
ending he had been working for during his career at North Baltimore.The senior standout holds the state
record for career pins with 154, but his goal was a state title.Ishmael fell short of the goal in the
Division III 195-pound championship match, dropping a 6-4 decision to Tyler Beck of Galion Northmor in
sudden victory overtime.‘‘The cards didn’t play in his favor,” said NB head coach Jesse Thomas. ‘‘He
wrestled hard. It’s where you are at and finishing your moves. We wrestled him twice before with different
results. We just didn’t wrestle a good match.”After a scoreless first period Ishmael scored two points at
the end of the second period to take the lead. Ishmael escaped with a standup to take a 3-0 lead.Beck
answered with a takedown and then released Ishmael for an escape.With 15 seconds left and trailing 4-2 Beck
took Ishmael down at the edge of the mat.In the process Beck went tumbling off the raised platform at the
edge of the mat.In overtime Beck took Ishmael down and won 6-4.Ishmael spent time before overtime tending to
a bloody nose.“I don’t think the nose bleed affected me. I just didn’t wrestle to my full potential,” said
Ishmael. “If I would have (wrestled well) I think I could have pulled it off.‘‘I didn’t finish my takedowns.
When he stopped my first moves I didn’t go to my second moves. I felt good the whole match until I gave up
the takedown at the end of the match.”Ishmael was 45-2 this season with 41 pins and finished with a 177-16
career record.Perrysburg had a productive tournament. Three of the Yellow Jackets four qualifiers placed and
they were all underclassmen. The team finished 13th in Division I standings with 30 points.The Yellow
Jackets’ J.P Newton finished third at 152 and his only loss was to a three-time state champion on Friday.In
his first match on Saturday, Newton built a 12-6 lead over Tony Dailey of Massillon Perry after two periods.
It was built on two solid takedowns and pair of nearfalls. The match ended 16-11.Newton then pinned Chuck
Buchanan of Tecumseh in 1:15 to finish third.Newton was 40-7 this season.“The tilt was working for me down
here,” said Newton. “I felt if I could get a turn I would win the match. It was a great experience for my
first year down here. I have great coaches that have prepared me well.”Perrysburg’s Mario Guillen at 106
placed fifth.In his first match Saturday against Josh Heil of Brunswick he bolted to an early 5-0 lead, but
Heil rallied for six points. With his nearfall at the buzzer Heil won 9-7.Guillen bounced back with a 9-3
victory over Tony DeCesare of Nordonia.Guillen dominated DeCesare to finish fifth and end his season at
35-9.Perrysburg’s Cale Bonner at 285 placed eighth after losing to Chuck Morgan of Lakeside 4-1. He finishes
38-11.I’m proud of every kid in a different way,” said Perrysburg head coach Sam Cotterman. ‘‘Did they
accomplish what they wanted to? No.‘‘Mario came back after to tough loss and beat another great kid. Newton
came back to win two big matches after losing to Collica. Cale Bonner, a sophomore, wrestled some bigger,
stronger wrestlers to place.’’In Division II, Eastwood’s Randy Caris battled his way from a first-round loss
all the way to third place at 170.In his first match Saturday, he trailed Brandon James of Ravenna, 2-1.
Caris started on top in the second period and rolled 10 nearfall points using a tilt and finished the match
with a 13-6 win.He defeated Clyde’s Chris Moore, last year’s state champ, 6-0, to finish third.“Even though
I think the tilt was a big factor in my success down here I also think it was conditioning,” said Caris.
‘‘The other kids would tire before me and I could keep the pace going. When they got tired they got a little
sloppy and I had an advantage.’’“He has had a great career,” said coach Joe Wyant. ‘‘This is his 57th win
which is a school record. He has 175 career wins which puts him second or third and he has had 100 or more
pins which put him in second or third. He has finished off his career about as good as you could.’’Caris was
57-4 this season.
