Ninth-ranked and Northern Lakes League
champion Perrysburg had two players on the Sentinel-Tribune’s All-Wood County volleyball team.The Yellow
Jackets on the first-team were Audra Appold and Savannah Miller.Abby Hesselschwardt of Otsego, Elise Wolff
and Jaci Juergens of Eastwood, and Madison Arnold of Elmwood completed the first-team.The Sentinel sports
staff selected the team.Wolff and Juergens are repeat first-team selections from last season, and Appold and
Arnold were honorable-mention.Appold and Miller helped Perrysburg to records of 23-3 overall and 14-0 in the
Northern Lakes League. The Yellow Jackets lost to top-ranked and state runnerup Toledo St. Ursula in a
Division I district final.Appold, a 5-foot-11 junior outside hitter, had 391 kills, 284 digs, 45 aces, 35.5
blocks and four assists."She did a really great job of rising to the occasion and taking on a
leadership role on the court," Perrysburg coach Jamie Babcock said. "She is a calm, consistent
presence for us who has earned great respect from her teammates and coaches."Her focus, dedication and
leadership sets such a great example for the younger kids in our program."Miller emerged as one of
Perrysburg’s best players after transferring to the district from Blissfield, Mich.The 5-10 junior outside
hitter had 253 kills, 189 digs. 25 assists, 21 aces and six digs."She quickly earned the respect of her
teammates and coaches by her hard work and dedication to getting better each day," Babcock said.
"She has really improved her game and is containing to work to find ways to get better. She was an
emotional leader for us and definitely helped elevate our team play to a new level
play."Hesselschwardt’s hitting was one of the main reasons Otsego finished 21-5 overall and won the
Northern Buckeye Conference with a 13-1 record.The Knights were 18th in the final coaches poll before losing
to Archbold in a Division III district final.The 5-foot-10 junior middle blocker had 376 kills and 24
aces."She’s been very committed and has worked hard to become a better player," Otsego coach
Cheryl Jones said. "She’s passionate about the game. She is very savvy and has great court sense. She
is like another coach of the court and that really helps the team.""She had a great year this year
and we’re looking for her to be even better next season. She hits with great power and she can put the ball
where she wants to."Wolff and Juergens played leading roles for Eastwood, 17-6 overall and second in
the NBC with a 12-2 record.Wolff, a 5-10 senior outside hitter, totaled 361 kills, 289 digs, 40 aces and 28
digs."She put a lot of time and effort into getting better, and it paid off for her," Eastwood
coach Jeff Beck said. "She had a great season. She’s so explosive and dynamic, and she can jump which
makes her so hard to block. She did a great job of hitting. She was tough to stop.Juergens, a 5-7 junior
setter, had 677 assists, 277 digs, 70 aces and 25 digs."She was one of the main reasons for Elise’s
success hitting," Beck said. "She is a great setter. The one thing other coaches always mention is
how soft her hands her … She has great touch on the ball. She can go against the tempo. She can tip. She can
do quick sets."She’s a true setter, not a ball distributor. Her setting is very consistent and she has
continued to get better every season."Arnold helped the Royals to an 18-6 overall record and third
place in the NBC with an 11-3 record.The 6-foot senior middle hitter had 260 kills, 112 blocks and 45
digs."Madison is the player every coach wants to have on their team," Elmwood coach Penny Rayle
said. "She is always positive, encouraging, motivating, and the one who will correct others in such a
way that they will listen to her."She is a leader on and off the floor, when she was energetic and
excited the entire team followed her, because that is what she does. She knew exactly what her role was on
the team and it was a huge role that not just anyone could fill."
