LIBERTY CENTER — Elmwood was swinging its bats for extra-base power Wednesday in a Division III sectional softball final against Liberty Center.
The Royals pounded out 10 hits, including three doubles and two triples, in a 9-1 victory. PHOTO GALLERY
The next tournament game for the Royals, now 19-4, is Tuesday at Bowling Green High School against the Genoa-Gibsonburg winner starting at 5 p.m.
In the third inning the Royals sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six times on six hits and a walk. Three of the six runs scored after two were out.
‘‘Hitting is always contagious, no matter where you are, any game, any situation,’’ said Elmwood junior Madison Arnold.
Elmwood scored one run in the first inning when Katie Bottesch singled with two out, stole second and came home on a two-base throwing error.
‘‘Getting on the board in the first inning, that kind of set the tone for us and kind of put them on their heels,’’ Elmwood head coach Matt Hoiles said.
In the third inning, the bottom two hitters in the order got things started as Lindsay George, a freshman, hit a ground ball single through the right side and Ragan Yarnell worked a seven-pitch walk.
Brittany George then laced a double to left-center to increase Elmwood’s lead to 3-0.
Liberty Center got two ground ball outs, with Brittany George scoring on the second grounder.
Arnold started the two-out rally with a triple to right-center field. Rebecca Harvey followed with an infield RBI single. Tori Hillard ripped an RBI double to left-center and Miranda Benschoter followed with another RBI double to make it 7-0.
‘‘I knew there were two outs and I knew I had to put it into play,’’ Arnold said about her triple which kept the third inning going. ‘‘Once I hit, everybody else started hitting and we just got going from there.’’
The Tigers got out of the inning on a ground ball to pitcher by Elmwood’s 10th batter of the frame.
‘‘We definitely have a lot more confidence once we get ahead,’’ Arnold said. ‘‘I feel we can have a little bit more fun, but we have to be careful not to get too relaxed.’’
Elmwood added two runs in the fifth inning as Brittany George singled, stole second and scored on Olivia Myers’ hard-hit triple to left-center. Myers scored on Bottesch’s fielder’s choice grounder.
‘‘We had come over here and scouted Liberty Center, and we took advantage of some of the things that we had scouted,’’ Hoiles said.
‘‘One through nine (in the batting order), you can’t relax,’’ Hoiles added about the Royals, who had eight different players get at least one hit.
Abbie Hill scored the lone run for Liberty Center in the fifth inning. She reached on a single, stole second, moved to third on a throwing error and scored on a wild pitch.
Benschoter allowed four hits striking out six, walking two and hitting one batter.
‘‘Miranda at times struggled today,’’ Hoiles said about his sophomore. ‘‘She’s learning to be a pitcher now. She’s not always going to have her ‘A’ game stuff and she’s going to have to do something different.
‘‘The maturity she is showing now; she is making the changes she needs to make.’’
Brittany George finished with two hits and two RBI. Arnold also had two hits and Bottesch had two RBI.
‘‘We knew it was going to be a test,’’ Hoiles said. ‘‘I think she (LC pitcher Kayla Sturgell) has a little bit of sneaky fastness to her.’’
Elmwood plays at Eastwood today in a Northern Buckeye Conference game.
