TONTOGANY — Elmwood’s softball team fended off a seventh-inning threat Friday from Otsego, winning 8-4, to remain undefeated in the Northern Buckeye Conference.
The Royals are 17-4 overall and 8-0 in the NBC, while Otsego dropped to 10-8, 4-5.
The game showcased two of the NBC’s top pitchers, who are both sophomores: Elmwood’s Miranda Benschoter and Otsego’s Kylie Asmus. Benschoter had 11 strikeouts and Asmus, seven.
Ragan Yarnell was 3-for-4 for Elmwood. Asmus also was 3-for-4 with a double, home run and two runs batted in for Otsego.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Otsego, down 8-4, loaded the bases after Benschoter gave up two walks and a single. But the young pitcher remained poised and worked her way out of a tight spot.
Benschoter forced a pop-up on the infield and concluded the game with two strikeouts.
“She is just a sophomore, but she has already pitched in some tough situations and she is going to pitch in even more tough situations,” Elmwood coach Matt Hoiles said.
“She did struggle ... but sometimes you have to out-pitch your opponent and that’s what she did tonight,” he said.
Offensively, Elmwood showcased its balanced lineup with Yarnell, the No. 9 batter, collecting three hits.
“She always puts the bat on the ball and when she gets on, she gives us a lot of speed,” Hoiles said.
Elmwood started the game with a run in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Rebecca Harvey. Otsego countered when Asmus scored on an error.
In the top of the second, Brittany George hit an RBI-double to put her team up 2-1. Olivia Myers also had a sacrifice fly and Katie Bottesch an RBI-single to put the Royals up 4-1.
Otsego tacked on a second run in the bottom of the second when Asmus hit an RBI-double off the wall to make it 4-2.
Elmwood then opened up its lead in the fourth inning. Myers had her second sacrifice fly of the game to make it 5-2.
A wild pitch allowed Yarnell to score and an Otsego error plated George to put the Royals up 7-2. Bottesch continued the Royal rally with a double and Arnold followed with an RBI-single to put Elmwood up 8-2.
In the fifth inning, Otsego put together a rally of its own, beginning with a solo home run by Asmus to left-center. Savannah Schwind and Tayler Bowen then hit back-to-back doubles. Bowen had the RBI to make it 8-4.
While disappointed with the loss, Otsego coach Dan Sheperd said he was encouraged by his team’s performance.
“We came off a couple games where we did not have the swagger we played with early on in the year,” Sheperd said.
“Kylie struggled for us the last couple of games and she was hurting a little more than she let on,” he said.
Asmus was hit on her throwing hand while batting during a recent game at Woodmore.
But on Friday, Asmus threw well.
“We are coming back at the right time,” Sheperd said.
