JERRY CITY — Miranda Benschoter pitched a four-hitter and Rebecca Harvey hit two doubles and a home run as Elmwood blanked Lake, 6-0 in a Northern Buckeye Conference softball game Wednesday.
Elmwood is 12-4 overall and 4-0 in the NBC while Lake fell to 8-7, 2-2.
A sophomore, Benschoter was sharp from the start, striking out 12 and walking only one. At one point she struck out six straight Flyers.
The four hits she allowed were scattered and with help from her defense, Benschoter was never really in trouble. Only one Lake runner reached third base.
‘‘I was hitting my spots really well and everything was going good,’’ Benschoter said. She is now 11-2 with 86 strikeouts and only 15 walks and a 2.38 earned run average.
Benschoter said pitching in a 1-0 game for six innings was ‘‘really nerve-wracking. You don’t want to give up any good hits or anything.
‘‘I trust my defense. I can give up a hit and I know they are behind me,’’ she added.
Lake head coach Dave Rymers said Benschoter kept the Flyers off-balance by throwing her change-up for strikes and getting ahead in the count.
Benschoter pitched well in Elmwood’s 4-3 win over Eastwood on Monday, but was dominating against the Flyers.
‘‘Miranda, I guess, is more of a warm-weather pitcher at this point,’’ Elmwood head coach Matt Hoiles said. ‘‘She was hitting her spots and her change-up has really come a long way from the beginning of the year.
‘‘As hard as she throws and then with the good change-up, it’s hard to hit,’’ he added. ‘‘Lake is a pretty good team and she pretty much canceled their bats today.’’
Harvey’s solo home run gave Elmwood a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning and then the Royals pushed across five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Harvey, also a sophomore, had an RBI double in the sixth.
‘‘They are going to find ways to win games by putting the bat on the ball,’’ Rymers said about the Royals, who had 11 hits in the game, including six hits in the sixth inning.
“When you keep putting pressure on a defense like Elmwood did today to us with their bats, they are eventually going to find holes and they did that pretty well,’’ Rymers continued. ‘‘And when you are in our shoes and you don’t put enough pressure on their defense by putting the ball in play, it’s a pretty easy game.’’
In the sixth, Madison Arnold led off with a sharp single to center and Harvey followed with an RBI double to left-center. After Tori Hillard reached on a fielder’s choice, Benschoter got an RBI with her third single of the game.
Then with one out, Elmwood got three straight RBI singles, as Ragan Yarnell, Brittany George and Olivia Myers each drove in a run.
The Flyers finally got out of the inning, turning a double play.
‘‘I’ve said it before, I probably have the fastest track team that softball teams can have,’’ Hoiles said. ‘‘The speed we have up and down the lineup and we have power hitting, it’s tough for a defense when we get out there and are running.’’
With the six-run cushion, Benschoter needed 11 pitches to get through the seventh inning, ending the game with two strikeouts.
‘‘I can settle down a little bit, but keep throwing hard and doing what I have to do,’’ Benschoter said about working with a 6-0 lead.
Harvey is hitting .568 (29-of-51) after her 3-for-3 effort Wednesday, with 10 extra-base hits and 22 RBI.
‘‘She keeps bringing it every day. She’s a sophomore, but she’s not playing at a sophomore-level,’’ Hoiles said about Harvey. ‘‘She’s a great kid and she works hard every day and the hard work is starting to pay off.’’
Kayla Encalado and Cortnee Cowell each hit a double for Lake.
