Junior Shane Edwards and the Yellow Jackets’ defense put a quick end to that. The Yellow Jackets went on a 19-2 run to end the first half and posted a 60-49 victory at Perrysburg High School Friday night. PHOTO GALLERY Edwards scored a game-high 29 points, as Perrysburg improved to 9-5 overall and 8-3 in the Northern Lakes League. “We came out on defense and we were lackadaisical,” Edwards said. “Then our coach got on us so we kind of got going on defense and that turned into offense.” Southview (6-9, 4-7), which had started the season 0-6 before winning six of its last eight games coming into Friday, jumped out to a 13-8 lead at the 1:32 mark of the first quarter. But the ’Jackets answered, scoring the final four points of the first quarter and then holding Southview to two points in the second period. Edwards scored 17 of his points in the first half and Perrysburg’s defense held the Cougars to a single basket over a span of over 10 minutes to build its lead to 27-15 at halftime. “The big thing, they started 0-6 and won six of their last eight, so they had a lot of confidence coming into the game,” Perrysburg coach Dave Boyce said of Southview. “They had a really good start. So we did a nice job of keeping our composure during that stretch, and then getting control of the game.” Perrysburg pushed its lead to 37-19 at the 4:57 mark of the third quarter. Then it was Southview’s turn to respond. The Cougars went on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to 39-29 at the end of the third, but Southview would get no closer than nine points the rest of the game. Senior Scott Milne finished with 10 points, four assists and four steals for Perrysburg, senior Jake Pfleghaar added seven points, 10 rebounds and three steals, and sophomore Nate Patterson chipped in with six points and six boards off the bench for the ’Jackets. “By and large, we rebounded really well, and we handled the ball, for the most part, really well. And we made our free throws down the stretch,” Boyce said. “(Southview) got some points in transition that first quarter and flat out ran it right by us. We did a better job ... stopping their transition, especially the guy with the ball.” Both teams struggled with turnovers, with Perrysburg committing 24 and Southview 20. The ’Jackets shot 51 percent (21-of-41) from the field, and 14-of-17 (82 percent) from the foul line. Southview, which was led by senior Allen Gant’s 22 points and eight rebounds, finished 20-of-45 (44 percent) from the floor and made 5-of-12 (42 percent) free throws. Gant scored seven points in the first quarter and 15 in the second half. “We found Gant a little bit better in the second quarter, and then we lost him again most of the second half when he took over quite a bit. But we had a big enough cushion at that point,” Boyce said. But it was the 6-foot-3 Edwards who had the biggest night, making all four of Perrysburg’s 3-pointers in the game and throwing down a dunk in the fourth quarter. “It was mostly just coming from our offense. Just playing within the offense and getting the shots that they gave me,” Edwards said. “I just try to do whatever the team needs that night, whether it’s scoring, defense, rebounds.” Edwards went 5-of-6 from the foul line and added three assists and two steals. “We did a good job passing the ball and we found (Edwards) in spots that are good for him,” Boyce said. “But he certainly stepped up and shot the three well, and he shot it well at the free-throw line too.” Perrysburg is back in action tonight, traveling to Cleveland to face St. Ignatius in a non-league game. Perrysburg has NLL games remaining against Northview, Anthony Wayne and Maumee, but needs to win out and have league-leading Napoleon (10-1 NLL) lose two of its last three NLL games to earn a share of the title. Perrysburg has won two straight and four of its last five games. The ’Jackets are yet to win three consecutive games this season. “Throughout the season we’ve been winning one, losing one, so this gives us some confidence going to Cleveland tomorrow,” Edwards said. “Hopefully we can get a win there and get our win streak up. “It’s a great win. Southview is one of our bigger rivals in basketball.” Southview won the junior varsity game, 55-54. Matt Kaczinski led Perrysburg with 18 points.
