The Eagles magical run was ended in the Division III state semifinal by the pitching of Bloom-Carroll’s Taran Alvelo and numerous sharply hit balls by the Bulldogs. SEE MORE PHOTOS
Alvelo held the Eagles to one run on one hit as only three Eastwood batters reached base.
Meanwhile the top six hitters in Bloom-Carroll’s order each had two hits as the Bulldogs posted an 11-1 victory.
The game, which was played at Akron’s Firestone Stadium, was called after five innings due to the mercy rule.
The Eagles finished 29-4 while making the first regional softball appearance in school history. Eastwood is 53-8 over the last two seasons.
‘‘We haven’t experienced losing very often and these players have been very special to me, and they have worked really hard to get where we’re at,’’ Eastwood head coach Joe Wyant. ‘‘I don’t know if anyone in our area can be 53-8 in the last two years.’’
Senior Emily Helm, who had Eastwood’s only hit in the game, said Eagles’ success this season was a lot of fun.
‘‘It’s been an awesome experience,’’ Helm said. ‘‘This team worked really hard to get to this point. We just have so much confidence in each other.
‘‘We’re happy that we got here and it was a great opportunity.’’
Whitney Foster, also a senior, said the Eagles have been under-appreciated during the season.
‘‘At the beginning of the season, everyone wants to get to state,’’ Foster said. ‘‘We, as a team, just keep pushing our way, working to get there.
‘‘Being Eastwood, everyone underestimates us and doesn’t think we can do it, but we’re proving people wrong,’’ Foster continued. ‘‘We proved people wrong by making it to the semifinals.’’
