COLUMBUS — Lorne Strausbaugh finished his career in style Saturday.
The Elmwood senior finished seventh to earn All-Ohio honors in the 1,600 during the Division III state high school track and field meet at Ohio State University’s Jesse Owens Stadium.
Strausbaugh had a time of 4:22.42 after entering the state meet with the 10th-fastest regional time of the 16 state qualifiers. MEET RESULTS PHOTO GALLERY
The top eight finishers in each event at state earn All-Ohio honors and are recognized on the awards podium.
“My freshman year, I was the worst kid on the cross country team and to come this far means a lot,” said Strausbaugh, whose regional time was 4:28.01.
Tri-Village senior Clayton Murphy won the state title in 4:11.72 to break the state-meet record of 4:12.93 set last year.
St. Thomas Aquinas senior Cory Glines — who set the state-meet record last year — was second in 4:11.83. McDonald senior Patrick Kunkel was third in 4:13.02. The top three were the only runners to break 4:20.
Strausbaugh was around seventh place most of the race.
“I was hoping I wouldn’t get gapped by that front pack,” Strausbaugh said. “I had more left that last 200 than I imagined. (The race) went very fast.
“I was pretty pleased with how it happened. I didn’t expect to beat a lot of the kids that I beat today. I had a good day at the right time.”
Elmwood senior Alex Jasso finished 13th in the 800 with a time of 2:00.08.
