COLUMBUS — Aricka LaVoy had plenty to be proud of Saturday.
Most of all, the Eastwood senior finished sixth in the long jump during the Division II girls state high school track and field meet. MEET RESULTS PHOTO GALLERY
LaVoy had a jump of 17-3/4 at Ohio State University’s Jesse Owens Stadium.
The distance was just shy of her previous best of 17-1 at the Northern Buckeye Conference meet and was within striking distance of the school record of 17-4.
“I didn’t expect this. It’s bringing me to tears I’m so happy,” LaVoy said. “I’m ecstatic.”
LaVoy jumped 16-8 at the regional, the 11th-best distance of the 16 state qualifiers.
The top eight finishers in each event at state receive the All-Ohio recoginition and are introduced on the awards podium.
Dayton Meadowdale sophomore Ja’la Henderson was the state champion at 18-1.
“My goal was finals, but I didn’t want to be ninth because I wanted to be on that podium,” LaVoy said. “Sixth is blowing my mind right now. It’s better than I expected.”
LaVoy appeared to break the school record on her second attempt in the finals, but she was called for a foul on her takeoff.
Jumpers have three attempts during the preliminaries with the top nine distances advancing to the finals where they receive three more jumps in an effort to better their mark.
In addition to going 17-3/4, LaVoy had jumps of 16-6½ and 16-9¼. She fouled three times.
