The
game was called due to lightning with 1:36 left in the game.
Perrysburg is 2-1 overall, while Central Catholic improved to 3-0.
“Our guys played hard defensively, but we’re not moving the ball on offense right
now,” said Perrysburg head coach Matt Kregel. “And it’s athletic ability. We’ve
got to find a way for guys to make plays.”
The ’Jackets had their chances in some portions of the game to make the contest
closer, but they were haunted by multiple dropped passes, which contributed them
to punting 10 times.
“There’s things that are open, there were several things that should have been big
plays tonight and we just didn’t make the plays when we needed to,” Kregel said.

Things looked promising early on as Perrysburg quarterback Steve Slocum found Austin
Bishop down the left sideline for a 33-yard touchdown pass, putting the ’Jackets
on top 7-0 with 6:53 remaining in the first quarter.
But just over four minutes later, Central’s Amir Edwards tied the game with a 41-yard
TD run.
Edwards finished the game with 166 rushing yards and four touchdowns, with the other
scores coming on runs of 12, 4 and 14 yards, respectively.
Tied at seven and in good field position, Perrysburg had possession with 2:05
remaining in the first half, but Slocum was intercepted by Irish defender Joseph
Solomon III at the 48-yard line.
Solomon returned the interception to Perrysburg’s 12-yard line, setting up Edwards’
second touchdown, which occurred on the ensuing play, putting Central up 14-7
going into the half.
“It was one of those things, Steve got antsy and just threw it blind without
concentrating on what he needs to do, and he just made a bad throw,” Kregel said
of Slocum’s interception.
“A team like this, you get them one leg up on you like that, it’s going to be hard to
come back from,” he added about the turnover turning into points.
Perrysburg’s defense, which has played well this season, contained Edwards and
dual-threat quarterback DeShone Kizer in the first half.
But the second half was entirely different.
Central gained 204 of its 352 total yards in the final two quarters, with Kizer
finishing with 136 total passing yards, after throwing for just 51 yards in the
first half.
He also threw a 32-yard TD pass to Keith Towbridge, which came just four minutes into
the second half, giving Central a three-score lead.
“It was literally a case of being out-manned at times,” Kregel said. “Bigger,
stronger, faster than us. But, had we made plays that were available in the
first half, we would have put ourselves in a position to be playing for this
game in the third quarter. We just didn’t do that.”
Perrysburg was limited by the Irish defense to just 14 yards rushing as a team,
Slocum did finish with 117 passing yards.
Tthey played hard,” Kregel said of his team. “But playing hard is not good enough
sometimes. You’ve got to make plays, you’ve got to do something to advance the
ball and we’re just not doing that right now.”
Perrysburg travels to Springfield next Friday to open Northern Lakes League play.
Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
