DEFIANCE — Lake pitcher Todd Walters exited the district championship game and gave reliever Cody Witt a fist bump as he told walked off the mound Saturday.
He gave Witt his support and trust, and it paid off for everybody in the Lake dugout.
Witt’s gutty performance in the final 1 2/3 innings helped the Flyers seal a 6-4 win over Archbold in a Division III district title game at Defiance High School.
It was Lake’s second district title in three years. The Flyers, 26-3, play Huron Thursday at 2 p.m. at Elida High School.

MAUMEE — Miranda Benschoter tossed a shutout and scored the game’s lone run to help Elmwood stun third-ranked Archbold 1-0 in Saturday’s Division III district softball championship game at Rolf Park.
“We were prepared for today,” Elmwood head coach Matt Hoiles said. “I challenged them. I said, ‘I think it’s going to be a high-scoring game, but can we win a 1-0 game? Can we?' The Elmwood of old won a lot of 1-0 games. Can we do it? We proved today we could.”
A pitchers duel between Benschoter and Archbold’s Payton Robinson engulfed the first five innings.

Anthony Wayne’s baseball team won a Division I district championship Saturday with a 5-2 victory over Bowling Green at Carter Park.
The Generals scored twice in the first inning, and once each in the second and third for a 4-1 lead after BG opened the scoring in the top of the first. PHOTO GALLERY
Quality relief pitching from Aaron Stark and solid defense protected AW’s lead.
The right-hander retired nine of the 10 hitters he faced over the final three innings. He struck out four and walked none.
The only batter to reach was Spencer Schultz, who was hit by a pitch with two out in the seventh.
The Generals, who have won 11 straight games, are 19-8 overall. BG is 15-13 after winning its first seven games.
The Bobcats couldn’t overcome a slow start against AW.
Their shoddy defense – a problem most the season — resulted in three more errors. Two of the errors handed AW its run in the second.
BG left the bases loaded in the second and third.
