TIFFIN — Bowling Green’s softball team is playing well at the right time.
The Bobcats — who have just four regular-season wins — earned a berth in a  Division I district championship game Tuesday.
Hanna Williford pitched a six-hitter and struck out nine to lead BG to a 7-1 win over Fremont Ross in a district semifinal at Tiffin University.
The Bobcats had nine hits and never trailed or were tied again after taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
Emily Sidle and Angie Hoffsis each had two hits, including a two-run double by Sidle. BG played errorless defense.
The Bobcats, 6-18 overall, face Anthony Wayne or Ashland for the district championship Saturday at noon.
The AW-Ashland game is Wednesday night at 5.
Ross is 15-13.
“We played a great game,” BG coach Jim Cress said.
Williford kept the Little Giants off-balance by changing speeds, moving the ball around the strike zone and using both sides of the plate.
The junior right-hander threw 69 of her 90 pitches for strikes and didn’t walk a batter.
“She’s come on late in the season and has done a phenomenal job,” Cress said. “She’s gotten a lot stronger. That’s really been a big thing for us.”
Williford retired the first nine Little Giants before Mckenzie Gallagher tripled to right and Kiera Hall singled to right to open the bottom of the fourth to cut BG’s lead to 2-1.
The Little Giants singled twice with one out in both the fifth and seventh, but BG held Ross scoreless both times.
Williford’s pitching has been complemented by excellent defense of late. BG made a number of good plays against Ross. The Little Giants had one bunt single and no sacrifice bunts.
“Our defense has gotten a lot better over the last few weeks,” Cress said. “We had a lot of errors early in the season, but we’ve really cut down on those and played solid defense.”
The Bobcats also defended well against Ross’ bunting game, something they saw in a 5-2 season-opening loss to the Little Giants.
“We knew they used a lot of bunting and a lot of running, so we worked a lot on our defense,” Cress said. “We played in, really attacked and tried to take their short game away and we did a really job of that.’’
The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the second when Sidle led off by reaching on an error by the Ross first baseman, who pulled her foot on a routine throw from the shortstop.
Lily Murnen’s sacrifice bunt moved Sidle to third and Hoffsis’ single through the hole between first and second scored Sidle.
BG increased its lead to 2-0 in the fourth on Sidle’s double to center, a passed ball and Reagan Morman’s infield grounder to short.
After Ross cut BG’s lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Sidle hit a two-run, two-out double to center in the fifth.
The hit scored Hanna Addy, who walked; and Kelsey Parker, who was hit by a pitch.
BG’s final three runs came in the sixth when Morman tripled to right, Hoffsis bunted for a single and Williford hit a two-run double to left for a 6-1 lead. Kenzie White ran for Williford and scored on Parker’s two-out single to right.
BG was helped by three Little Giant errors and the passed ball — all of which factored into the scoring, resulting in five unearned runs.
“We’ve gotten a lot more confident at the plate,” Cress said. “We’re not afraid to step up and swing the bat. We’re getting runners on and putting the ball in play, getting some good, solid hits here and there.”
BG was a 2-1 winner over Perrysburg in its sectional final May 16 and played well in a 5-1 loss Friday to fifth-ranked Springfield.
“Confidence is a big, big thing for us,” Cress said.
The Bobcats are 1-11 in the Northern Lakes League with remaining games against Perrysburg and Napoleon.
