ARCHBOLD — Bowling Green’s baseball team went toe-to-toe with second-ranked Sandusky Perkins on Friday, but a four-run sixth inning cost the Bobcats a chance to play for a district championship. SEE MORE PHOTOS
BG lost 6-3 to Perkins in a Division II district semifinal at Archbold’s Memorial Park.
The Bobcats led 3-2 in the fifth inning, but with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, the wheels came falling off.
BG committed two errors and allowed four runs on one hit in the sixth inning. A controversial call at second base which could have ended the inning, brought BG coach Robert Yenrick out of the dugout.
“We just threw the ball around too much and some calls didn’t go our way,” said junior Andy Fisher, who relieved starting pitcher Nolan Dill in the sixth inning.
Dill and Fisher combined for a six-hitter. They had four strikeouts and two walks.
“We knew we could play with them, it was just a matter of finishing,” Fisher said.
“Sandusky Perkins is an awesome program,” Yenrick said. “Coach (Ray) Neill waits for something to go wrong and he takes advantage of that situation.”
BG committed three errors, two in the sixth inning, which were costly.
“We expected to win this game. Once you are in the tournament, there are no rankings,” Yenrick said. “We can play with anybody with our pitching staff.
“Coach (Robert) Schultz’s pitching calls and our pitchers kept us in the game.”
Perkins got on the board in the first inning with a Seth Bryant RBI single.
BG got its first runner in scoring position in the fourth inning when Quinn Donaldson doubled down the third-base line. A two-out single by Rob Tyrrell scored Donaldson to tie it 1-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, Perkins went ahead 2-1 on a Thane Walton RBI single.
BG took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning. Ricky Riggs drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second on a bunt by Fisher. Jeremy Chambers then smacked a single to right-center to score Riggs. Mitch Cromley followed with an RBI single to right field.
In the sixth inning, Perkins’ Quintin Contelli hit an RBI single to even the score at 3-3.
It seemed BG would be able to minimize the damage in the sixth as Fisher recorded back-to-back strikeouts. But Perkins was able to plate a run on a controversial call made when a Perkins runner dived back into second base. This allowed Mason Gerold to take home and put Sandusky up 4-3. Two errors followed, which allowed the Pirates to take a 6-3 advantage.
Fisher led off BG’s last at-bats with a single, but the Pirates turned a double play. A strikeout ended the game.
BG is 14-13 overall.
With the win, Perkins advanced to today’s district final against top-ranked Defiance.
