4 Perrysburg wrestlers win at state

COLUMBUS – Four of Perrysburg’s eight wrestlers are still alive in the championship round and the team is
in sixth place after Thursday’s action in the Division I state tournament at the Schottenstein Center.

J.P. Newton (152) advanced with a win over Noah Edwards of Twinsburg, 12-4. Newton took an early lead at
the end of the first period with a takedown and a near fall. He kept command on his feet in the final
two periods to secure the win.
At 182, Rocco Caywood took a 9-2 lead over Nate Hall of Lewis Center Olentangy in the first period, using
two sets of takedowns and nearfalls. He scored a takedown in the second period and coasted to an 11-3
win.
Kadin Llewellyn (195) won a close one over Gerald Thornberry of Moeller. Llewellyn’s early takedown in
the first period held up for a 3-1 win.
Cale Bonner had a squeaker at 285. After a scoreless first period, Bonner escaped early in the second
period to take a 1-0 lead over Seth Maylor of Massillon Perry. Bonner rode out the third period for the
1- 0 win.
All four are in the quarterfinals.
Three Yellow Jacket wrestlers are still alive in the consolation quarterfinals.
Mario Guillen (113) dropped into the consolation draw with a 5-3 loss to Jake Donahue of Massillon
Washington in the opening round.
In the first round of the consolation, he scored two takedowns in the first period versus Sam Roth of
Lakota East and it was enough to give him a 4-3 win.
Brother Moises Guillen (120) was dominated on his feet and lost to Jon Furnas of Olentangy Liberty, 14-8
in round one. He fought hard to stay in with a 6-4 win over Noah Schaub of Green in overtime. Guillen
scored a reversal at the end of the overtime period for the win.
Dan Waltermeyer (160) lost to Cody Pollit of Lewis Center Olentangy 9-0 in the first round, but fought
back in the second round against David Celinski of Garfield Heights. He scored in sudden victory for an
8-7 win.
Mark Delas (220) lost his first match when he was pinned by Chalmer Frueauf of Moeller in 35 seconds. He
lost again in the consolation round by fall in 2:01 Delas ended the season at 15-8.
The Thursday session went fairly well in Division III with three of the four Wood County wrestlers still
alive for a title.
Both Otsego wrestlers were dominant in their first-round matches.
Trent Soto (132) scored an early takedown on Hunter Pizzino of Cadiz Harrison and rode out the entire
second period.
He iced the match in the final period with an escape and takedown for a 5-0 win.
Teammate Jordan Hendrix (160) won by technical fall over Austin Windle of Ada, 15-0. Hendrix scored all
15 points in the first three minutes of the match.
Elmwood’s Jacob Wise (170) was successful in his first round match with a 3-2 win over Wes Buettner of
Delphos St. John. Wise used an underarm throw to score in the start of the first period and it held up.

Devon Dunbar of Northwood had a near miss in his first-round match with T.J. Malkus of Berkshire.
After scoreless regulation Dunbar lost a takedown at the buzzer in sudden victory to lose 2-0. He
rebounded in the first round of consolation by a dominating ride Spencer Seibert of Coldwater. He scored
two sets of nearfall using the Guillotine to take the 8-1 win. He will wrestle in the consolation
quarterfinals today.
