Patience and consultation important for gardeners

PEMBERVILLE – After the harsh winter most gardeners are anxious to get out and begin work in their yard
and landscapes.
Laura Esker, the garden center manager for North Branch Nursery says there is not one key thing that
should be done that covers the multitude of plants, shrubs and trees one might have on their property.

"Each and every plant is so different – you need to know the plant," she said. "It is
better to talk to a professional before doing anything."
Both she and Tom Oberhouse, owner of North Branch, said despite being an anxious homeowner or gardner,
patience will be worth the effort.
"Wait to see what is alive or dead before doing any pruning out," Esker said.
Oberhouse added regarding items which may appear dead, "We had more winter damage than we are used
to. Be patient and give them time, they may recover."
Esker stressed the importance of preparation and knowledge of what someone plants before planting it.
Again she stressed the importance of speaking with a professional.
"We try to sell the right item for the right place. We want what we sell to succeed for the
customer. Every homeowner is different," she said.
The Pemberville facility, like most other area garden centers, is staffed by people who know what has
been proven to work best.
To help homeowners and gardeners, North Branch, 3359 Kesson Road, is holding an open house on Saturday
from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The public is invited to visit.
(Editor’s note: Additional information and photos from North Branch on trees, shrubs and spring planting
will be featured on a future garden page.)
