Construction is about to begin on the first section of a trail to the Bowling Green National Guard Training and Community Center. The city has contracted with Eric Palmer to "scalp out" the trail, which will be filled with 12 inches of berm mix and topped off with two inches of screenings, Director of Parks and Recreation Dr. Michelle Grigore said. The city's Department of Public Works will haul and pack the stone into the excavation. The first section will be built on the south side of Newton Road from the community center east to Brim Road. The cost of the first phase is $24,000 with the bulk of the funding coming through a grant from the Wood County Park District. Grigore said plans call for the trail to be constructed in five or six phases as money becomes available. Each phase has an estimated cost of $25,000 to $30,000. The second phase would be along Brim south to Van Camp Road. Additional phases would eventually bring the trail to Poe Road at the west side of the Bowling Green High School property.
In an unrelated trail project some paving work is planned this summer at Simpson Garden Park. The paving would be limited to sloped sections of the trail to cure drainage and washout issues caused by water runoff from rain and snow melting. Grigore said estimates and specifications are being reviewed to resolve the scope of the work.
