Wood Lane cuts breaks to make up school days

Wood Lane School students will have a much shorter summer break as administrators plan on how to make up
days lost to bad weather.
To date, students have been out of class 18 days, exceeding all other school districts in Wood County.

The Wood County Board of Developmental Disabilities approved action Monday that will shorten spring break
as well as add days to the end of the school year.
As no vote has been taken in Columbus on extending calamity days from the five currently allowed, the
board has decided to give parents notice now for future make-up days, which are subject to change
pending legislative action.
It is now scheduled that students will be in school March 28, which was scheduled as a parent conference
day; and April 17 and 21, during spring break.
Additional days will be added to the end of the school year, taking students to June 12 if no changes
occur out of Columbus.
Superintendent Melanie Stretchbery also asked the board to add four additional contingency days in case
of more bad weather. Those days are June 13-20.
Also at the meeting, the board was updated by Stretchbery on the status of a new member.
She said no one applied for the positions, and she had talked with someone who is currently receiving
benefits from the program. That person, while still interested, indicated this was not a good time to
join the board.
Stretchbery went to the next name of her in-house generated list, and that person is being considered by
Probate Judge David Woessner, who is in charge of appointing members to the board.
The open seat on the board should be filled in March. The seat expires Dec. 31.
Stretchbery also commended bus driver Christy Kapelka and aide Larry Bateson for their actions when a
Wood Lane bus was forced off the road and into a snow bank on Interstate 75.
"You exercised incredible control of that bus," Stretchbery said, adding that Kapelka is the
newest driver for Wood Lane.
The board also had a moment of silence for Toby Huber, an investigative agent for the county board. Huber
died Feb. 3.
