Waterline on way to Bloomdale

Bloomdale residents can look forward to an improved water supply by the end of the year.
The current system of wells has a hard time keeping up with demand, according to Bill Barber, engineer
for the Northwestern Water and Sewer District. The village is expected to connect with district water
lines that will supply Bowling Green water.
Bloomdale joined the district in 2012 with the intent of making the supply change, Barber said. A study
showed connecting with Findlay, Fostoria or North Baltimore wasn’t cost effective, so a plan was
developed to connect with a district line near Elmwood Schools on Jerry City Road that would supply BG
water.
"In the long run, it’s a big benefit for the village," Barber said, noting that restrictions on
water use were imposed on Bloomdale residents in the past.
"It’ll be better quality water and more availability."
Barber estimated that the improvements could also have a positive economic effect on Bloomdale, with the
new system possibly attracting development. It should also boost the rating of the fire department which
would likely save companies money on insurance.
The project, estimated at $2.5 million, is financed through the U.S. Department of Agriculture with a
$340,000 grant and a $1.6 million loan. It has not been finalized, but the interest rate is expected to
be less than 4 percent, said Dave Cook, assistant director of NWWSD. Funding should be filled in with
$500,000 in Community Development Block Grant expected from the state on July 1.
The 5.3-mile water line will be installed beginning at Jerry City Road and travel down Bloomdale Road
into the village, with a pump station to be built at the southwest corner of the intersection with Oil
Center Road.
Construction could begin as early as September and is expected to be completed by late 2014.
"Once it gets going, it shouldn’t take the contractor very long to complete the project," Cook
said.
