Walbridge paves way for roadwork (3-7-14)

WALBRIDGE – A Toledo company has been selected to do a major road project in the village this summer.
At Wednesday’s meeting, council awarded the Union Street work to Crestline Paving and Excavating Inc.
Dave Kuhn, project engineer for Feller, Finch and Associates, Maumee, said seven bids were received and
opened on Friday. They ranged from Crestline’s low bid of $314,899 to $386,230.
After the meeting, Mayor Ed Kolanko said he didn’t know when work would begin, but the project has a
Sept. 1 completion date.
It encompasses repaving, updating sewers and installing new curbs on Union, from Main to Dixon streets.

The village has a $209,000 Ohio Public Works Commission State Capital Improvement Grant, also known as
Issue 1, for the project. Walbridge has to match it with $209,000.
Kolanko said those amounts will be adjusted to reflect the $314,898 bid from Crestline.
"We’re very happy the lowest bid came in below the expected budget," the mayor said.
Kuhn said he didn’t have recent experience working with Crestline, but a check with several entities,
including Perrysburg and Toledo, netted good references for the company.
Council last month learned it had been awarded another OPWC grant to continue improvement work down Union
Street to Martendale Place. That work will start next year. The grant, which also has a 50 percent
match, was $262,000.
Rachel Latta, also of Feller, Finch and Assoc., said there are several grant opportunities for the
village this year. They include the Wood County Park District and the Wood County Community Development
Block Grant program. The village received grants from both of these programs last year.
"It’s getting more and more competitive, but it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try," Latta said.

Also at the meeting, Councilman Fred Sloyer reported that the safety committee is working on an
"adopt a fire hydrant" program. There are 122 hydrants in the village that should be
"adopted" by residents who will be asked to dig them out when they are buried in snow.
