WALBRIDGE - The village pool needs another life saver ring. This year, council has voted to spend thousands of dollars on a new liner and stainless steel steps. But the improvement process ground to a halt earlier this month when a leak was discovered. Mayor Dan Wilczynski said the Aqua Terrace pool is leaking about 1,400 gallons per day. At Wednesday's meeting, council voted to postpone doing the $1,500 step work, which is part of Americans with Disabilities code upgrades, until the leak can be assessed. The mayor or village administrator was charged with getting a company or leak detection specialist to surmise the damage and an estimate for repairs. "If it's an ungodly amount, I'll certainly have to come back to council," Wilczynski said. Sue Hart-Douglas, chairwoman of the parks, recreation and community events committee, said the pool is "nickel and diming us." After the meeting, Wilczynski said the pool is 50 years old.
It has been a topic of discussion for several years. Facing budget problems in 2010, Wilczynski proposed closing it to save money, but reconsidered when there was some public outcry and a membership drive. The pool also annually doesn't run in the black. Last year, $8,000 was transferred from the general fund for operations, which included $7,000 in payroll costs. The village took over the privately-owned Aqua Terrace Swim Club in 1994, purchasing it for $13,000 and making $6,200 in improvements. The pool is still open but its last day of operation this season is Sunday. Also at the meeting, council: • Awarded a $58,093 contract to Bowers Asphalt and Paving Inc., Walbridge, to do street improvements. The streets are Parkview Drive, East Union to East Perry streets; Perry Street, Parkview Drive and Park Lane; Harlan Drive, from circle to 209 feet west, and Clayton Street, Harlan Drive to 185 feet north. • Voted to spend $2,634 on a four-seater swing set. Most of the money is from a Wood County Park District grant, Hart-Douglas said. The village portion is $462. • Heard the business and economic development committee will meet Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the village hall.
