The Undergraduate Student Government of Bowling Green State University is eager to work with downtown businesses. USG President Alex Solis and Vice President David Neely spoke before the Bowling Green Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors Friday. "We definitely want to make sure students are involved in downtown," said Neely. The pair are hoping that the students legislative body can engage the downtown businesses through social media, and assist in promoting them to students. They are hoping that more students will want to stay in Bowling Green on weekends instead of heading home to do their laundry, shop, and take part in other activities. "We want to see that business brought into Bowling Green," said Solis. The pair noted that students should be more encouraged to come and look around the town, and not limit themselves to the campus and its nearby environs. "As students come to campus they should learn the lay of the land," Neely said.
The pair also discussed a number of initiatives that the USG is involved in for the upcoming year, including Phase II of an $11 million renovation project at the 30-year-old Student Recreation Center. A consulting and architectural firm in Toledo is being worked with on the planning for the effort. The USG is focused on communicating to students about the new additions, which they hope will be a key element in student retention at BGSU. "We're trying to do our part too as students to increase retention at the university," said Neely, and to that end a retention team has been formed to study the issue. "So we've actually reached out to, I believe, 20 or 25 different student organizations for representatives to sit on this team as well as administrators" to focus on retention. Another major initiative is starting a student-led capital campaign at the university to raise money for various initiatives. "We want to create the culture of giving," said Solis. A further area of focus is the upcoming new Student Health Center to be built on campus, in collaboration with Wood County Hospital. "I think we're really looking forward to seeing how things work out and seeing a new building for the students and really improving health services on campus," Neely said.
