A quartet of longtime friends sat under the shade of the tree, armed with hats and water bottles. “We spotted this table and decided to come over here,” said Wally Pretzer, a retired Bowling Green State University employee. Pretzer and his wife were joined Friday at Lunch in the Park by fellow BGSU retirees Chuck McCaghy and his wife Dawn. The four were all wearing hats, enjoying music and food while remaining out of the sun. The couples said they have been doing their best to stay indoors and soak up the air-conditioning as temperatures soared this week. “I don’t feel like doing much, certainly,” Wally Pretzer said. Local residents have been combating the heat, which reached 103 degrees Thursday, using a variety of tactics. “Yesterday we had a family movie day and that’s how we beat the heat,” said Karen Kreuger, of Bowling Green. And Friday, she and her two sons, ages 4 and 7, were hitting up the pool at City Park.
The Kreugers were one of many families taking advantage of the pool. Vans lined the pool parking lot, unloading kids in suits ready to hit the water. The Shafer family of Bowling Green, was lucky enough to have their own pool. Chrissy Shafer, whose son is 5 and her daughter, 1, said the kids have been staying cool in their pool. They have also been joined by many friends also wanting to be refreshed. And inside, Shafer said she is making sure everyone gets a break from the heat. “We are thankful for air-conditioning and popsicles,” she said. While some have stayed indoors to beat the heat, Richard and Shirley Householder haven’t let high temperatures stop them. They admit it was hot, but the couple bought fresh products at the farmer’s markets in Perrysburg and Bowling Green. The Householders had shady lawn chair seats Friday at Lunch in the Park. “It’s always cool out here,” Shirley Householder said.
