ROSSFORD - The Rossford School Board has made its decision on a new superintendent.
Daniel Creps, principal at Woodland Elementary in Perrysburg and a Rossford High School alumnus, was chosen following an executive session Monday night.
However, while he is the board's designated choice, the decision will be formally approved by a vote at the board's next meeting on March 18.
Creps will take over for interim superintendent Bill McFarland. According to a news release, he has signed an initial two-year contract, and will begin April 1.
School Board President Dawn Burks said the board was "tremendously pleased" with Creps as their choice.
"It was a difficult decision," she said in the release. "We had a good and organized process and some great candidates. Our two finalists were both very well received by the staff and community during their interviews. The board worked hard on the search and took the task of superintendent selection very seriously.
"We spent a good amount of time with each candidate, made reference calls, and talked to lots of people. Dan made a great connection with the board and is looking forward to becoming superintendent in the community where he grew up."
Creps was chosen over a second finalist for the position, Deb Piotrowski, who is superintendent at Xenia City Schools.
Creps held teaching and administrative positions in Sylvania City Schools for 13 years before coming to Perrysburg, where he is completing his sixth year as Woodland's principal.
The board went into executive session following a special meeting Monday night to discuss the appointment and employment of an employee, but initially indicated that no action would be taken following the session.
The timing of the decision in executive session came during Sunshine Week, when news organizations promote open government and freedom of information.

I hope the decision was made analytically, based on experience and qualification. Where was Dan a superintendent previously? It seems this was more an emotional decision, putting a puppet in power that the community feels can be manipulated to do their bidding. A leader needs to do what’s right, even if it’s not the popular decision. We’ll see if decisions are made based on what’s best for the school system, or based strictly on how the wind of the community blows. I’m not too optimistic on the future of the school system, too many are stuck in the past to see the future. But, Dan has an opportunity to prove me wrong, which I would *love* to see happen. Doing the right thing in this district is not the popular decision, which will be the challenge that I wish Dan the best of luck with.

"However while the board's designated choice, the decision will be formally approved by vote at the ... next meeting" - So much for the Sunshine Laws of the State of Ohio.
