PERRYSBURG - Could some TARTA service remain in the city after this fall's cutoff?
A letter made available to the Sentinel-Tribune indicates that there may be efforts to do just that.
The letter from Health, Sanitation and Public Utilities Committee Chairman Todd Grayson, and addressed to Perrysburg TARTA Board representative Kevin Rantanen, notes that at the June meeting of the HSPU, audience members "raised issues with continuation of para-transit services after the City leaves" TARTA. The audience asked that the issue be brought before the board.
Para-transit has been a hot-button issue during the TARTA debate, going back even to the early days of the city's deliberations to exit TARTA. Continuing through the conceptualization process of the city's new transit system, para-transit riders, who largely use TARTA's TARPS service for people with physical disabilities, have been well-represented and vocal at meetings.
An issue of special interest has been the transit "gap" that will be left once TARTA service in the city terminates on Sept. 22. The city is not expected to have its own system, which has been sent out for bid by independent contractors, up and running before January, leaving more than three months without public transport.
In his letter, Grayson asks Rantanen to introduce to the board "the idea of TARTA continuing to serve in some capacity after the city leaves the service area" this fall. "This could be either to fill any potential gap in service time or on an ongoing basis."
"One idea I have proposed in public meetings is an agreement based on a negotiated rate to handle all inter-jurisdictional trips for para-transit riders," Grayson continued.
"Today I am specifically asking that the TARTA Board of Trustees outline proposed general financial and management terms for offering door to door inter-jurisdictional para-transit service for those qualified persons who wish to travel throughout TARTA member political jurisdictions."

What a waste of public dollars. This isn't the 50s where people would either walk to work or take the bus. Times have changed, and so should our public dollars. Please let's stop wasting $ on public transportation and put it to things that need addressing immediately.

You are wrong.
I suppose that we should continue shoveling Billions towards Oil & Gas Tax giveaways, or Hundreds of Billions to defend the "Private" Oil shipping lanes.
Public Transportation is one of the best investments of Public monies once you step back from Perrysburg's Anti-Tax Zealots and Tea Party Freaks.
Times have changed, now we care for the Disabled, Elderly and infirm.
