Wood County Park District is about to grow a bit larger.
The Board of Park Commissioners learned Tuesday that the county will soon be the beneficiary of a Perrysburg Township landowner who wishes to have her 61 acres conserved and given to the park district.
The meeting was held in the lodge at Beaver Creek Preserve near Grand Rapids.
Director Neil Munger said the owner, Ann B. Sawyer, does not presently reside there and is working with Black Swamp Conservancy to obtain a conservation easement before transferring the land to the park district.
Munger said the property is mostly wooded with two homes standing on the land. It sits on Lime City Road across the street from the Perrysburg Township's Public Safety Facility and administrative offices, just north of U.S. 20.
"When you look at this map, you will see an absence of trees. This is the only large track of trees left in this area," he said.
"So when we were approached with this and looked at the big picture … it's really something worth saving."
The area also contains a quarry that has dried up over the past decade but could be refilled or kept empty for study by geology classes, Munger said.
"It's certainly something we will look at, as far as is there anything we can do with that."
There has been little discussion yet of how the property may be used, aside from how the two residences may work for park district programming and activities.
Park board members were appreciative of Sawyer's soon-to-be donation and said they'll consider the best way to thank her.
"I just think it's a wonderful gift," said Mary Krueger.
Separately, the board voted to accept a low bid of $232,000 from KF Construction and Excavating, of Clyde, for a project to add restrooms and a parking lot to the Black Swamp Preserve near West Gypsy Lane Road in Bowling Green. The low bid came in well under the published estimate of $253,000, Munger said.
Construction is expected to be complete by October.
