LIME CITY – Perrysburg Township trustees considered new money for the police department and the renewal
of two fire levies at their department heads meeting Wednesday.
The board took no action but will likely do so next week as it mulls how to generate about $1 million for
the police budget.
A new levy to generate that figure would likely be around 2.5 mills, though 3 mills is an option that
would provide flexibility later in the term of the levy.
Last week, the board discussed a possible 2.6-mill levy, and their information suggested the owner of a
$100,000 home would pay about $91 per year under that figure.
Without settling on a preferred option, the group also discussed whether to pursue a continuing levy or
one with an expiring term, with Trustee Gary Britten arguing firmly in favor of a term of about five
years.
Voters should have a chance to weigh in on whether government is using their money responsibly, Britten
reasoned.
Two fire levies which are expiring, one at 1 mill and the other at 2 mills, generate a combined
$1,151,081 for the department.
In other business, Township Administrator Walt Celley presented the draft of a new policy that would
require employees to exhaust all of their vacation and sick days and compensatory time before taking
time off under the Family and Medical Leave Act.
Celley said it would drastically reduce administrative work of frequently putting employees on leave and
taking them off. Britten noted the policy would be a "radical change" from current practice.

Separately, the board:
• Approved contracts with Lexipol to review and manage policies and procedures for the police and fire
departments. The service also provides monthly testing and tracks changes in law that affect those
policies. Celley said the employee testing was a particularly attractive feature.
Cost for the first year is a combined $12,598 for both departments, after which annual fees total $9,488.
Trustees noted the yearly fee seems steep, so they agreed only to pursue the service for the first year
initially.
• Heard that two pieces of playground equipment may not meet safety standards at the Perrysburg Community
Center in Perrysburg Heights. A quote is expected next week on the cost to remove the equipment and add
a safety barrier.
