Perrysburg eyes water backup

PERRYSBURG – The city is looking at a project to create a backup connection in the event its water supply
from Toledo becomes unavailable.
The project, which would begin with a study on the feasibility of the backup system, is a joint effort
led by Northwestern Water and Sewer District and including the city of Bowling Green.
The matter was discussed by two members of the Health, Sanitation and Public Utilities Committee on
Tuesday. Perrysburg would join NWSD and BG in seeking a $50,000 grant for the study, which costs $85,000
and would require a $10,000 buy-in from each entity.
Alice Godsey, Perrysburg’s director of public utilities, spoke briefly about the need for a backup
system, which would consist of making a connection to Bowling Green’s water line at Ohio 25 and Five
Point Road.
"If the city of Toledo would have an emergency and not be able to continue the supply, that is our
only water source," Godsey said, adding that the water in the city’s elevated tanks would not
supply Perrysburg for very long.
If the feasibility study shows value in the project, actual construction costs are estimated at $370,000.

Councilmen Rick Rettig and Tim McCarthy agreed to recommend joining the grant application. Councilman
Todd Grayson, chair of the committee, was not present Tuesday.
In other business, the committee heard Godsey’s proposed comments objecting to the Environmental
Protection Agency’s proposal to give that agency more authority over local waterways, including ditches
and storm sewers.
The comments must be backed by city council and are expected to be discussed at its next regular meeting.
