The Child Care Center at the Perrysburg Township campus of Owens Community College will be shuttered later this spring.
The Owens community, center staff, and parents using the center were notified of the situation Thursday.
"It is with heavy heart that Owens Community College is going to be closing the Child Care Center on the Toledo-area campus as of June 30, 2013," said Brad Meyer, director of public and media relations at Owens, in an interview this morning.
The reason for the closure is financial, he said, indicating that the college has been required to subsidize operations at the center, but "we are no longer able to absorb financial losses" at the facility while maintaining the expected quality of service.
The center's fiscal year 2013 losses are expected to top $340,000 by June 30, the end of FY 2013.
The center provides care for 94 children, focusing on the ages of 6 weeks to 6 months during the school year, and to school-age children up to age 8 during the summer. It is open to faculty, staff, students, and community members. The center is also the home of the Child Care Technology Lab which, according to its website, "serves as a college lab school in which early childhood education students can work under the direction of both faculty and our lab school teaching staff to learn the art of educating young children."
The center currently employs about 16 individuals, and Meyer said that "no decision has been made to the status of the employees" after the closure.
He said that the closure "will not effect the early childhood education academic program" because those students utilize other locations in addition to the center for experiential learning. It was not clear this morning how many students have been involved at the center.
He was not aware of any other child care offerings planned after the center closes.
